7 Stakes News
The 7 Stakes is a race held at Royal Randwick Racecourse in mid-September during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
The event is unlisted but offers a lucrative $1 million in stakes along with a ballot exemption to the winner into the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) a fortnight later.
The Shorts Day is headlined by the Group 2 $1 million The Shorts (1100m) for The Everest hopefuls.
The meeting was formerly known as George Main Stakes Day and saw the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) serve as a key Epsom lead-up.
Ahead of the 2023 edition however the George Main Stakes was renamed the $5 million King Charles III Stakes and moved to The Everest Day in October.
The other key acts on the race card are the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m), Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m), and the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m).
The 7 Stakes – Epsom Handicap double is now a key spring racing bet type.
Horses in the 7 Stakes field are likely to have an earlier Sydney lead-up in an event like the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) in August or the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) a fortnight earlier.
In 2023 the inaugural 7 Stakes winner Think It Over improved on a lead-up third in the Winx Stakes to win third-up.
Think It Over went on to frank the 7 Stakes form winning the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes the following March. Fangirl meanwhile improved on her 7 Stakes third in 2023 to win the King Charles III Stakes at her next start.
Fangirl returned in the 2024 7 Stakes to improve on her third the year prior and salute for the punters.
The second running of the $1 million 7 Stakes took place on Saturday, September 21, 2024 and was won in bullish style by the Chris Waller-trained favourite Fangirl ($1.75F).
