Caulfield Cup Day traditionally runs on the third Saturday in October and is the first of the ‘Big 3’ Spring Majors followed by the Melbourne Cup. Caulfield Cup Day in Melbourne is run on the same date as Sydney’s $20 million The Everest – the richest turf race in the world – held at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

In 2024 trainer Ciaron Maher made history winning both The Everest in Sydney with Bella Nipotina and the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne with Duke De Sessa.

The Caulfield Cup is regarded as one of the key lead-up races to the iconic Melbourne Cup run over the two miles at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.

The major Spring Cup’s double has been achieved by 12 horses including Let’s Elope in 1991, Doriemus in 1995, Might and Power in 1997, Ethereal in 2001, and most recently Without A Fight in 2023.

In 2022 the Caulfield Cup form was franked with the runner-up Gold Trip going on to win that year’s Melbourne Cup for the Maher/Eustace stable.

Gold Trip returned carrying the 58.5kg top-weight in the 2023 Caulfield Cup and finished a brave third behind the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained winner Without A Fight who went on to become the latest stayer to do the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double.

The next edition of the Caulfield Cup 2025 runs on Saturday October 18, 2025 as the opening leg of the famous Spring Cups Double.

The Caulfield Cup field attracts the season’s best stayers from both Australian and international racing stables. Many of the horses in the Caulfield Cup field are looking to stretch out to the two miles of the iconic Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington.

Good lead-up races into the Caulfield Cup each spring including the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington that produced the 2016 winner Jameka (2nd) and Verry Elleegant (2020) who did the double, and the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes. Incentivise (2021) was the last stayer to complete the Turnbull Stakes – Caulfield Cup double.

Duke De Sessa (4th in 2024) was the last Caulfield Cup winner to come via the Turnbull Stakes. 

Horses coming into the Caulfield Cup field via a Sydney Spring Racing Carnival run traditionally have contested the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick three weeks earlier. Both Railings (2005) and Tawqeet (2006) came off a The Metropolitan win before their respective victories in the Caulfield Cup. More recently the 2021 The Metropolitan winning mare Montefilia ran a brave fourth in that year’s Caulfield Cup results.

In 2024 The Metropolitan winner Land Legend ran third in that year’s Caulfield Cup trifecta next start.

In 2022 Durston improved on a lead-up sixth in The Metropolitan before his upset Caulfield Cup success for Team Waller.

In 2023 Without A Fight won the Caulfield Cup fresh off a first-up lead-up in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at the track the month before.

In early October Racing Victoria close the Caulfield Cup Third Acceptances leaving less than half the original nominees before the official Caulfield Cup Final Field is announced a week later.
