Caloundra Cup

The 2024 Caloundra Cup was postponed due to heavy rain and poor track conditions and was rescheduled for Sunday the 14th of July, 2024. The Listed Caloundra Cup is 2400m feature held at the Sunshine Coast during the later stages of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

2024 Caloundra Cup Results

  • 1st: #14 Mission Of Love
  • 2nd: #1 Alegron
  • 3rd: #9 Warp Speed

The Caloundra Cup is one of the most popular non-Group races in Queensland. Hosted the weekend following Tattersall’s Tiara Day, the Caloundra Cup draws crowds from Brisbane and other major metropolitan areas for an exciting day of regional racing at the Sunshine Coast.

Raced over 2400m under quality handicap conditions, with a minimum weight of 54kg, the Caloundra Cup pays a total of $300,000, impressive for its Listed status. It is the feature event of the day, exceeding the prominence of the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas – now known as the Winx Guineas. Also held on the day is the Glasshouse Handicap, a $300,000 quality handicap sprint raced across 1400m.

Races on Caloundra Cup Day can be quite a lot of fun for punters, as the form of most runners is well established following the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. Horses usually contest the Caloundra City Cup as part of the end of their winter campaign, in search of a final black-type run before retiring for the winter break or stepping up to two miles for the Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) a fortnight later.

The form out of the 2021 Caloundra Cup was franked with the winner Stockman going on to run second in the following year’s Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) in Sydney.

The 2022 Caloundra Cup form was franked with the winner Le Don De Vie going on to run second in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick that October. The Caloundra Cup runner-up Arapaho further franked the form winning the Grafton Cup next start. He would go on to run well in a host of other races including his Group 1 Tancred Stakes victory the next year.

In 2023 the Caloundra Cup winner Zoumon franked the form winning the Grafton Cup next start before a good spring headlined by a $2 million The Five Diamonds second placing in Sydney. The Caloundra Cup form from 2023 was further franked by the runner-up Bois D’Argent who returned the next winter to claim Brisbane’s Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).

The rescheduled 2024 Caloundra Cup ran on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and was won in a brave run by the bonny mare Mission Of Love ($12) in an upset.

2024 Caloundra Cup Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Caloundra Cup 2024 Tips on the popular winter staying showdown this season.

  • To Win: #2 Hezashocka ($3.70 at time of publish)

Hezashocka shapes up well as a favourite who thrives in the wet. The Shocking gelding has a winning record over the 2400m distance and enjoys a class drop after a respectable run in The Q22 against tough competition. While the 60kg top weight is a challenge on a likely Heavy track, his overall form this season suggests he has the class to overcome it. He’s proven effective on Heavy tracks, winning the Gosford Cup earlier this year and placing well in Group 1 company. He also defeated Alegron in the Premier’s Cup over this distance. With his strong form and suitable conditions, Hezashocka is a clear contender for victory.

Caloundra City Cup History

The Caloundra City Cup has a relatively short history in comparison to many other Cup events. The race was first held on the Sunshine Coast Turf Club’s Opening Day on July 25th, 1985, which coincided with the launch of the new racecourse. Initially named the Sunshine Coast Daily Cup, the inaugural edition of the race paid a total of $25,000. The history of the Caloundra City Cup is intertwined with that of Sunshine Coast Racecourse, the first major Queensland track built outside of metropolitan Brisbane in the preceding half century and the first to boast a synthetic surface, the “Cushion Track”.

The race today boasts an impressive following and a well-structured race day to be a feature of Caloundra Cup Day is held on the premier Sunshine Coast racing weekend.

In recent Caloundra Cup history the New Zealand-trained horses have enjoyed a strong strike-rate with 11 wins since 1985 – the latest being Megablast (2018) and Igraine (2019) going back-to-back.

There was no 2020 Caloundra Cup due to COVID-19.
