In 2024 the race was renamed the Don Casboult Classic in honour of the former Moonee Valley Racing Club chairman.
A sprint race contested over 1200m at set weights plus penalties, the Don Casboult Classic (Typhoon Tracy Stakes) offers $200,000 in prize money. Fillies in the Typhoon Tracy Stakes field may come off an earlier autumn run and target later features including South Australia’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in May.
One good lead-up race into the Typhoon Tracy Stakes is the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) run at Caulfield on CF Orr Stakes Day, and in 2015 Royal Snitzel ran second in both races. In 2018 Tulip improved on a lead-up fourth in the Kevin Hayes to win the Typhoon Tracy Stakes.
In 2023 the Typhoon Tracy Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Wee Nessy running second next-up in the Group 2 $1 million Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) in Sydney. The third placed Lady Laguna meanwhile ran third in the Arrowfield before returning in 2024 to dominate her summer – autumn campaign with a host of victories including in the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race at the Gold Coast and Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).
The Typhoon Tracy Stakes 2025 ran on Saturday March 22, 2025 as the Don Casboult Classic on William Reid Stakes Day and saw Clean Energy ($2.35F) make up all the ground coming with a sweeping late run to win with Craig Williams in the saddle.

Wide open edition of the Don Casboult but for value Just Like Gaby looks somewhat forgotten in the marets at $12 at time of publish. Ciaron Maher’s beautifully bred Pierata filly has had five runs for two wins now with both her victories coming back-to-back at her latest starts. She chases a hat-trick up in grade and the big advantage for her is The Valley. Three starts at the course for two wins and a second. Not bad! Some like the tight turns and she’s definitely one. Won over 1000m here by 4.5 lengths two back before carting 58kg to a one-length triumph over the six-furlongs. Same track and trip but down a kilo to 56kg. Needs to rise to the challenge of Group company after a flat seventh to Drifting last August in Caulfield Group 3 Quezette, but she’s flying now, and this is the right course for her.

Typhoon Tracy Stakes / Don Casboult Classic History
The Don Casboult Classic (Typhoon Tracy Stakes), conducted by the Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC), is one of the youngest Group races held in Melbourne having first run in 2011 when Miss Gai Flyer won the inaugural edition. It started out as a Listed race before gaining its current Group 3 status in 2014.
The race was formerly named in honour of former star mare Typhoon Tracy who won a host of Group 1 races including the CF Or Stakes – Futurity Stakes double, the Group 3 has been won by the likes of Norzita (2013) and Almighty Girl (2016). The 2016 Typhoon Tracy Results also saw two smart mares emerge with Secret Agenda (2nd) and Super Cash (3rd) going on to win bigger and better races.
The event was moved from February to March in 2023 to the latest edition of the then $5 million The All-Star Mile race which returned to Moonee Valley having first run at the course in 2021.
The Typhoon Tracy Stakes was renamed the Don Casboult Classic in 2024 and moved to William Reid Stakes Day in late March.
