Strickland Stakes News
The Strickland Stakes is a Group 3 race held during late June or early July each year at Belmont Racecourse in Perth. Run under weight for age conditions over a distance of 2000m, the Strickland Stakes offers $200,000 in prize money and attracts a quality line-up of mainly local gallopers each winter.
Trainers often nominate their horses in the Strickland Stakes following acceptable performances in the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) held at Belmont a month previously under the same race conditions and the Hyperion Stakes – Strickland Stakes is a popular Perth winter betting double. Fuchsia Bandana (2015), Scales Of Justice (2016) and Material Man (2018) – who also won the Belmont Sprint in a rare treble – are the latest gallopers to complete the double. The following year in 2019, Group 1 winning mare Galaxy Star won the Belmont Sprint – Strickland Stakes double with a second in the Hyperion Stakes as the beaten favourite in between.
In 2020 the race’s 2018 winner Material Man returned and became the ninth two-time Strickland Stakes champion.
The Strickland Stakes form has stacked up in tougher interstate races in recent years with the 2019 runner-up Gatting going on to win the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington that September.
The 2022 Strickland Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Marocchino going on to win the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes (2100m) that summer.
In 2023 the Strickland Stakes third place-getter Dom To Shoot franked the form going on that summer to run third in the Group 1 Railway Stakes trifecta before winning Perth’s Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m).
Strickland Stakes Day runs on the same date as Brisbane’s famous $3 million Stradbroke Handicap.
The 2024 Strickland Stakes ran on Saturday June 15, 2024 in WA and was won in a narrow upset by 40-start veteran Let’s Galahvant ($10).

- To Win: #1 Western Empire ($1.55 at time of publish) – BET NOW
The Strickland Stakes shapes up as a one-horse race at Belmont this Saturday, with Western Empire the clear favourite at prohibitive odds. While there’s no value betting on him, his dominance makes it hard to look elsewhere in this Group 3 event. William Pike remains in the saddle for trainer Grant & Alana Williams. The six-year-old comes off a Group 3 double (Northam Stakes & Belmont Sprint) in May, followed by a close fourth in the Hyperion Stakes (1600m) two weeks ago. Despite the recent placing, he’s proven his class with a 2021 Group 1 Railway Stakes win. While his recent victories haven’t been beyond 1400m, his pedigree suggests he can handle the 2000m distance. His overall form suggests he should be too strong for this field.

Strickland Stakes History
Originally hosted at Ascot, the Strickland Stakes moved to Belmont for a year in 2005, and the decision was made to host it there permanently from 2011 onwards. While at Ascot, the Strickland Stakes was ran over 1800m rather than the current 2000m. Inaugurated in 1901, the race celebrated its 100th anniversary at Ascot in 2001.
Notable Strickland Stakes winners include Perfect Answer (1988), Finito (2001, 2002) and Marasco (2009, 2010). In 2002, there was a dead heat between Gwalia Girl and Finito. The race was not held between 1942 and 1944 due to World War II, and adjustments to the racing calendar meant that there was no 1999 edition of the race.
Marasco and Tarzi made the exacta two years in a row; 2009 and 2010.
More recently class horses Material Man (2018) and Group 1 winner Galaxy Star (2019) have won the Strickland Stakes in WA.
In 2020 Material Man returned as an eight-year-old to become the race’s oldest champion and the ninth to win the event twice.
There was another veteran on top of the Strickland Stakes results in 2022 with the Jason Miller-trained eight-year-old Prince Of Turbo celebrating an upset win at 15/1.
