The Sir John Monash Stakes is held each year in mid-July at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne.
A Group 3 race, the Sir John Monash Stakes pays total prize money of $200,000.
The Sir John Monash Stakes is one of the few races run during the heart of winter at Caulfield and is a nice follow-up for horses that contested races over the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Raced over 1100m, the Sir John Monash Stakes is a weight-for-age sprint best suited to the fit winter short-distance specialists or fresh performers racing first-up as an early start to the spring.
The best out of the Sir John Monash Stakes may continue on to have a successful Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival as was the case in 2016 when the winner Wild Rain backed-up to win the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) in September before a Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) third at Moonee Valley that season.
Horses may also have a run between the Sir John Monash Stakes and the spring races at Caulfield a fortnight later in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m). In 2018 the Sir John Monash Stakes winner Voodoo Lad ran second next-up in the Bletchingly and would also go on to win that year’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes race in Perth.
The 2024 Sir John Monash Stakes ran on Saturday, July 13, 2024 and was won in a demolition job by the Ciaron Maher-trained four-year-old Recommendation ($3.70) who stormed home by a record seven lengths.

- To Win: #3 Mornington Glory ($3.20 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Mornington Glory looms large in the small field on Saturday. Following a strong third in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate here back in February, trainer Gavin Bedggood brings him back fresh. While his overall record at Caulfield isn’t extensive, his top-tier competition experience makes him a standout in this open race. Drawing well in a limited field gives him a clear advantage. This is a winnable race for Mornington Glory.
2024 Sir John Monash Stakes Field
The Sir John Monash Stakes Final Field & Barriers are released by Racing Victoria on the Wednesday of race week and will be published in full below. Many sprinters are racing first-up on the back of early winter spells, while the fitness edge belongs to gallopers coming off a lead-up run in something like Brisbane’s Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) the month prior.
Oakleigh Plate graduates from the autumn – Mornington Glory (3rd) and Recommendation (6th) – head the 2024 Sir John Monash Stakes field and markets for Saturday’s Group 3 in Melbourne.

Sir John Monash Stakes History
The Sir John Monash Stakes was upgraded from a Listed race to a Group 3 race following the 2013 edition. Hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club, it is one of the regular races at Caulfield Racecourse. The Sir John Monash Stakes was run over 1000m until the 2005 edition, when it was first held over 1100m.
The Sir John Monash Stakes was known as the Moondah Stakes up until it ran for the first time under its current name in 1998, when Jugulator won it. Originally run by the Victorian Amateur Turf Club (est 1875), the race is now run by the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC), since the organisation’s name was changed in 2002.
Notable Sir John Monash Stakes winners include Regal Shot (2001), Rubitano (2002), Super Elegant (2004 & 2005) and Platelet (2012). Super Elegant finished third in 2003 and second in 2006, narrowly missing out on winning for four years running. Rubiton had a good result in 2002, with the first three places being taken out by his progeny, Rubitano, Ruby Slipper, and Prince Rubiton.
In 2020 Sir John Monash Stakes history was made when the nine-year-old winner Jungle Edge was ridden to victory by Jade Darose, the first female jockey to win the race this century.
In 2024 Recommendation won the Sir John Monash Stakes by a record seven length winning margin.
