It was previously run in mid-November on the Saturday after Champions Stakes Day closes the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
In 2021 the Sandown Stakes was moved to Underwood Stakes Day in late September. Underwood Stakes Day in 2021 was held on a Saturday, while in 2022 the meeting ran at Sandown Hillside on the Sunday after Sydney’s Golden Rose Day.
For 2023 the Sandown Stakes took place on the first Sunday of October at its own standalone meeting at Hillside the day after Sydney’s Epsom Handicap Day program at Randwick.

In 2022 the Sandown Stakes was run in September and the form franked with the winner Gentleman Roy running a next-up fourth in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) before a subsequent second the following February in the 2023 Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m). Military Expert meanwhile ran second in the 2022 Sandown Stakes and third in the Toorak Handicap results.
The 2023 Sandown Stakes winner Antino was brave next-up running second in that year’s Toorak Handicap results.
The 2024 Sandown Stakes runs on Saturday September 28, 2024 as the feature event on its own standalone meeting at Sandown Hillside.
