The Neville Sellwood Stakes is a recently upgraded Group 2 race run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in late March each Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival as part of the Tancred Stakes Day.

Joe Pride’s dual Group 1 winning Tavistock four-year-old, Ceolwulf ($1.50F), was back in winning form third-up on Tuesday improving on a lead-up third in the George Ryder to carry 59.5kg to victory on a Heavy (8) track and narrowly salute as the odds-on favourite in the 2025 Neville Sellwood Stakes results. Jockey Chad Schofield and Ceolwulf came from fourth on the turn taking the entire straight to lift within the final 50m and run down Just Fine to get his nose in front right on the line in a thrilling finish.

Contested over a 2000m staying distance, the set weights plus penalties clash is open to horses aged four-years-old and upwards and offers $300,000 in total prize money as of 2025 when it was upgraded from a Group 3 to Group 2 event.
The race serves as a potential lead-up to the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) held over the two-miles at Randwick in mid-April on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’.
Autumn gallopers may come into the Neville Sellwood Stakes field a run in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at the track a fortnight earlier and the last horse to complete the double was It’s Somewhat (2016).
The Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) is another nice lead-up and in 2016 Messene ran second in both races.
In 2023 Zeyrek improved on a lead-up second in the Sky High Stakes to win the Neville Sellwood.
After the Neville Sellwood Stakes next-up options include the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on the second Saturday of April at Royal Randwick or the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) a week later on All Aged Stakes Day. In 2016 Sir John Hawkwood won the Sky High Stakes, finished third in the Neville Sellwood and then second in the JRA Cup.
In 2018 the Neville Sellwood Stakes winner Arbeitsam went on to finish third in the Doncaster Mile results.
The form of the 2021 Neville Sellwood Stakes was franked when the runner-up Entente went on to place second in that spring’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).
In 2024 the Neville Sellwood Stakes winner Serpentine franked the form with a fourth next up in the Sydney Cup results.
The Neville Sellwood Stakes 2025 ran on Tuesday April 1, 2025 as part of Rosehill’s Tancred Stakes Day card as a Group 2 race for the first time after being postponed due to heavy rainfall in Sydney on Saturday and was won in a photo-thriller by Joseph Pride’s short-priced favourite Ceolwulf ($1.50F).

Going for an upset in the recently upgraded Neville Sellwood with a fit and in-form runner at double-figures. PALMETTO (2) is chasing his first Rosehill win at his seventh start at the track so, even though this isn’t his best course, he is going well enough to suggest he can record back-to-back wins. Lead-up victory last time out in the Canberra Cup was by a narrow margin but he had 58kg on his back. Drops to 55kg here so should relish that and a good gate two draw. Kerrin McEvoy rides him fourth-up and the distance is right. Likely to be on pace from that draw and think he’ll go on with the job and surprise a few at a price.

Neville Sellwood Stakes History
The Neville Sellwood Stakes was first run in 1980 and won by Iko. The race is named after former champion jockey Neville Sellwood (1922 – 1962) who rode the first Golden Slipper Stakes winner Todman. For one year in 2010 the event took place at Canterbury Racecourse over 1900m. After starting out as a Listed race it gained its current Group 3 status in 2011.
Notable Neville Sellwood Stakes winners include Lights Of Heaven (2013) and Junoob (2014). French import Pornichet won the race in 2015 and went on to take out that winter’s Doomben Cup in Brisbane.
The race gained Group 2 status ahead of the 2025 edition which was held on the Tuesday after the original Saturday meeting was a washout.
