The Group 3 staying showdown takes place in February over the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival and currently offers $250,000 in prize money.

Launceston Cup Day also features the Group 3 Vamos Stakes (1400m) for the fillies and mares that offers plenty of top summer betting opportunities for punters at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Run under handicap conditions over a mile and a half (2400m), the Launceston Cup field traditionally attracts mainly local stayers coming off a run in the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) a fortnight earlier.

The Hobart Cup – Launceston Cup betting double is popular each summer and was last achieved by Eastender (2019) and Up Cups (2016).

The 2022 Launceston Cup form was franked with the runner-up Ho Ho Khan heading to Melbourne for a brave next-up fourth in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) that autumn at 60/1.

The Launceston Cup 2023 winner Aurora’s Symphony (who also won the event in 2022) franked the form with a next-up second in that year’s Group 2 Adelaide Cup results. The 2023 Launceston Cup third placed Spirit Ridge further franked the form with plenty of good, subsequent runs including a second in Sydney’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) that spring.

Excelleration (2024) was the last horse to complete the Launceston Cup – Adelaide Cup double.

The Ladbrokes Launceston Cup 2025 ran on Wednesday February 26, 2025 as part of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival and saw local improver Distrustful Award ($21) come with a barnstorming run down the outside to beat the top fancy Promises Kept ($1.65F) in a big upset.

2025 Launceston Cup Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Ladbrokes Launceston Cup 2025 Tips on the popular Tassie staying showdown this summer.

  • To Win: #1 Promises Kept ($2.40 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Happy to stick with the favourite in Launceston Cup betting this week with the in-form Ciaron Maher trained Cluster gelding Promises Kept bringing in the right form lines to take out the feature in Tassie. This is the five-year-old’s first run at Launceston, but he’s been excellent in his lead-ups at sister track Hobart. Two back he was a 1.75 length winner over stablemate Strawberry Rock in the Summer Cup (2200m). Strawberry Rock turned the tables last time out when getting a 2kg weight turnaround in the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) over the mile and a half. There was only 0.2 lengths on the line between them and in this third encounter in the Apple Isle they meet back equal in the weights with 59kg apiece. That puts Promises Kept firmly on top. Wins.

2025 Launceston Cup Field

The Launceston Cup 2025 field and barriers are released the Friday before the event featuring a similar line-up to that of the Hobart Cup and will be published in full below as soon as announced by Tas Racing.

The 2025 Launceston Cup final field features a smart line-up of autumn stayers with Summer Cup champ Promises Kept tipped to turn the tables on his Hobart Cup winning stablemate Strawberry Rock.

2025 Launceston Cup Nominations

Early nominations for the Launceston Cup in 2025 are out the Wednesday before race day.

Launceston Cup History

The Launceston Cup has been run and won since way back in 1865 when Panic won the inaugural edition of this time honoured Tasmanian race.

It ran as a Principal race until gaining its current Group 3 status in 1980 when Summer took out the event. It was originally a three-mile contest run over a gruelling 4800m.

It ran over two miles (3200m) – the same distance as the iconic Melbourne Cup – from 1847 – 1879 before decreasing. It has run over 2400m since 2002.

Notable Launceston Cup winners in recent years including St. Andrews (2000, 2002 & 2003), Geegees Blackflash (2013), Up Cups (2016), and subsequent Adelaide Cup winner Excelleration (2024).

The 2018 Launceston Cup winner Bondeiger set a new record winning the mile and a half feature in 2 minutes 29.56 seconds.

In 2023 Aurora’s Symphony successfully defended his title to become the latest back-to-back Launceston Cup winner.
