Run over a distance of 1350m, the BRC Sprint is an option both for horses that excel at shorter sprints as well as mile runners. With a total purse of $300,000 as of 2023, the BRC Sprint is a good early lead-up for gallopers heading towards the Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm the following month.
Each winter, the BRC Sprint winner is exempt from Stradbroke Handicap ballot.
Recently class mare Tofane improved on a lead-up second in the BRC Sprint to win the Stradbroke Handicap in 2021.
For 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic saw the BRC Sprint contested earlier in May over a shorter 1200m distance and offering a lesser $125,000 in total prizemoney.
Known as the BTC Sprint up until 2009, the race was renamed to reflect the new Brisbane Racing Club, the result of an amalgamation of the Brisbane Turf Club and Queensland Turf Club. The BRC Sprint runs alongside the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) and a number of other black-type winter races.
The 2022 BRC Sprint form was franked with the runner-up Alligator Blood winning the Stradbroke Handicap next start followed by a host of subsequent interstate Group 1 victories over the next 12 months including the 2022 Underwood Stakes, 2022 Cantala Stakes and the 2023 Futurity Stakes.
The 2024 BRC Sprint winner Here To Shock went on to frank the form the next year when winning the Group 1 BCD Group Sprint in New Zealand.
The 2025 BRC Sprint runs on Saturday May 24, 2025 as part of Brisbane’s Doomben Cup Day card.

- Each Way: #10 Rockribbed ($17 at time of publish) – BET NOW
For an intriguing Each Way value play in the final race on Doomben Cup Day, we’re keenly eyeing the local Tony Gollan-trained ROCKRIBBED (19). This consistent seven-year-old looks a genuine Top 3 contender at a generous price, making him an excellent roughie prospect. While the wide draw and a strong field might test his win credentials outright, Rockribbed is a bona fide Doomben specialist (3 starts: 2 wins, 1 placing). He appears somewhat underrated here, being a fit and in-form runner on his pet track in what’s shaping as an open affair. He comes into this race full of confidence, chasing a hat-trick of wins after securing back-to-back victories in Queensland. Two starts ago, he won impressively at Eagle Farm under a significant weight, before taking out the Listed ATC Trophy (1200m) on a wet Gold Coast track on May 10. His versatility on all types of going means a firmer track at Doomben certainly won’t hinder him, and his lovely strike-rate at the distance (9 starts: 3 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third) further boosts his appeal. With his regular jockey aboard, the key will be his ability to overcome the wide barrier, but if he gets a clear run, look for him to be charging hard for a prominent finish.
2025 BRC Sprint Field
The BRC Sprint field attracts a line-up of middle-distance sprinters that could come off a Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign or that may have had a Brisbane lead-up in other similar class and distance events.
Horses out of the BRC Sprint field could back-up later in the Carnival’s Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m), a race the 2017 BRC Sprinter winner Jungle Edge ran second in next-up, except in 2022 when the race was held on the same day as the Kingsford Smith Cup.
The 2025 BRC Sprint field & barriers are due out on the Wednesday of race week and will be available in full below once announced by Racing Queensland.
The BRC Sprint 2025 final field features a smart line-up of winter sprinters including Team Hayes’ last start Caulfield winning four-year-old War Machine, the resuming Bjorn Baker trained Star Witness gelding Iknowastar, and Tony Gollan’s local Group 2 Victory Stakes graduate Freedom Rally.

BRC Sprint History
Following the merger of the Queensland Turf Club and the Brisbane Turf Club in 2009, the BTC Sprint became known as the BRC Sprint.
First run in 1985, the race is old enough to have a solid reputation while still being relatively young. The BRC Sprint was a listed race for its first decade, upgrading to Group 3 for the 1996 edition and remaining at that grade since. Two trainers share the record for most races won, at two wins each: Walter Doolan and John Morish.
The fastest time around the BRC Sprint was made by Chief De Beers in 1998, at 1:17.5. Incidentally, Chief De Beers won 20 out of his 51 races, and he never won away from Doomben Racecourse.
The BRC Sprint was first run in 1985, when Final Affair seized a solid victory.
For 2020 the BRC Sprint was moved to the start of May and took place over a shorter 1200m due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it’s affect on the Australian racing industry.
In 2022 the BRC Sprint was moved to the Queensland Derby Day card a week later to run over 1300m at Eagle Farm due to heavy rainfall in Brisbane.
