Richard & Will Freedman’s Grunt gelding Pocketing ($9) relished a Heavy (8) track to narrowly head the 2025 Tulloch Stakes results on Tuesday backing up from a maiden win over the Randwick mile to salute in his first Group assignment. He was given a perfectly timed ride by Josh Parr up the middle just getting there in time to defeat Firm Agreement.

The meeting is host to two Group 1 races – the $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m) and the $750,000 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) for the fillies & mares.
Offering $300,000 in total prize money the Tulloch Stakes serves as a key lead-up to the Group 1 $2 million Australian Derby (2400m) contested at Royal Randwick a week later on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’. Recent horses to complete the Tulloch Stakes – ATC Derby double include Starcraft (2004), Jon Snow (2017), Levendi (2018), Angel Of Truth (2019), and Quick Thinker (2020).
In 2021 Young Werther ran third in the Tulloch Stakes results before a second in the ATC Derby that autumn.
The 2023 Tulloch Stakes also produced that year’s Australian Derby winner with Major Beel running second in the Group 2 lead-up.
The form was further franked that year with the 2023 Tulloch third place-getter Awesome John heading over to Perth next race to win the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m).
Horses may come into the Tulloch Stakes field via a number of earlier autumn lead-up races including the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) run at the same track a fortnight earlier on Coolmore Classic Day.
The Tulloch Stakes 2025 ran on Tuesday April 1, 2025 at Rosehill Gardens as a key ATC Derby lead-up after being postponed due to heavy rainfall in Sydney on Saturday and was narrowly won by the Richard & Will Freedman trained Pocketing ($9) in a close thriller.

Wide open edition of the Tulloch Stakes but tipping the Kiwi form to stack up down under in this 3YO staying race as it has done a few times before. 2. GOLDEN CENTRUY was brave when third last start at home in the Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m). This son of Pierro hails from the star Tony Pike stables and has been working his way through the grades across the Tasman. He remains a maiden after seven runs, which is a little bit of a concern, but maybe he’s been crying out for a trip to Oz! Only 2.5 lengths beaten as a 36/1 outsider in the Derby and comes back in distance which I think will suit. Think he’s the improver with Nash Rawiller in the saddle. Can break his maiden status here.

Tulloch Stakes History
First run in 1973 when Longfella claimed victory, the Tulloch Stakes began as a Principal race run over 1850m. In 1979 the race distance was increased to 2000m, and the event was installed as a Group 2 race.
There have been a number of high-quality horses to take out the Tulloch Stakes including Ivory’s Irish (1995), Mahogany (1994) and Durbridge (1991), all of which won the Tulloch Stakes/Australian Derby double.
More recent notable Tulloch Stakes winners include next-up Australian Derby champions Quick Thinker (2020), Angel Of Truth (2019), Levendi (2018), and Jon Snow (2017); as well as Hauraki (2015), and Count Encosta (2010).

In 2022 the Tulloch Stakes was moved from Rosehill on Saturday the 26th of March to Newcastle on Monday the 28th of March due to unsafe Heavy track conditions and rainfall.
