In 2020 the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival was reduced and many races rescheduled due to COVID-19 including The Roses, which was moved to the weekend after Stradbroke Handicap Day and run at Eagle Farm Racecourse over a shorter 1800m distance offering $175,000 in prize money.
Raced over 2000m, the Group 2 The Roses is run under set weights conditions and is open to three-year-old fillies as a key lead-up to the following month’s Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).
The Doomben Roses was upgraded to a Group 2 event for the 2014 edition, having previously been run as a Group 3 race since 2003.
Three fillies throughout history have completed The Roses – Queensland Oaks double with Ethereal (2001), Scarlett Lady (2011) and Youngstar (2018). Ethereal also went on to take out that year’s Melbourne Cup over the two miles at Flemington making her the most famous of all The Roses winners.
In 2022 The Roses form was franked with the winner Barb Raider finishing second next-up in that year’s Queensland Oaks results, while in 2024 Miss Joelene ran third in both The Roses and the QLD Oaks.
The Roses 2025 takes place on Saturday May 24, 2025 as part of Brisbane’s Doomben Cup Day card.

2025 The Roses Tips
Stay tuned for our insider The Roses 2025 Tips on the Queensland Oaks lead-up this winter season in Brisbane.
- To Win: #6 Philia ($4.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW
No doubt the Australasian Oaks winner will take some beating even from her outside alley but the value in this year’s The Roses looks to lie in flying local Queenslander PHILIA (10) who comes off three straight wins and is out to extend her picket fence up in grade. The David Vandyke trained All Too Hard filly is well bred and racing right up to her pedigree. At her latest she made it a hat-trick in Brisbane up to Black-Type grade winning the Listed Princess Stakes at Eagle Farm on April 26 over the mile. The way she handled the 1600m for a two-length triumph suggests she’ll see out the 2000m without a worry and Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride in a plus. She’s proven at Doomben and is drawn just worse than midfield so gets options in the run. Can step up.
2025 The Roses Field
The Roses field attracts the season’s top three-year-old staying fillies coming off a lead-up run in either an earlier Queensland race like the Gold Coast Bracelet or possibly the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2010m) in Adelaide and is the last of the traditional Queensland Oaks lead-up races.
The official 2025 The Roses field & barriers will be announced below the Wednesday of race week.
The Roses 2025 final field features a quality line-up of potential QLD Oaks bound fillies including Glen Thompson’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks winner Benagil drawn near the carpark and Sunshine Coast trained All Too Hard filly Philia chasing her fourth win on the trot.

The Roses History
Established in 1996, The Roses has grown rapidly in prominence, achieving Group 3 status within 9 years (1996) and Group 2 status in 18 years (2014).
Inaugurated as the Doomben Roses, from 2010 onwards the race has been known simply as The Roses.
The Doomben Roses was initially raced over 1625m, dropping back to 1615m in 1997, and then remaining at a steady 2020m from 1998 until 2011. Since 2012 the race has been 2000m.
The 2020 The Roses ran at Eagle Farm over 1800m due to COVID-19.
In 2022 The Roses was moved to Eagle Farm Racecourse on Queensland Derby Day and took place over 2100m due to heavy rainfall.
Many horses who race in the Doomben Roses go on to compete in the Queensland Oaks (2400m), the premier staying event for fillies in Queensland. Only two fillies have won the Doomben Roses-Queensland Oaks double; Ethereal (2001) and Scarlett Lady (2011).
The 2023 The Roses was won by the previous year’s Golden Slipper winning filly Fireburn.
