Held under set weights conditions the 1200m sprint offers $300,000 in total prize money and offers the winner a ballot exemption for the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens the following month.

The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m).

Colts & geldings running in the Skyline Stakes field may have come off an earlier autumn run in a traditional lead-up including the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill in late January or the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) the week before.

After contesting the Skyline Stakes the Golden Slipper-bound youngsters may have another lead-up into the Group 1 in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick in early March. The last horse to win the Skyline Stakes – Golden Slipper Stakes double without a run in between was Dance Hero (2004).

More recently, the 2019 Skyline Stakes winner Microphone went on to run second in that year’s Golden Slipper Stakes before winning the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce (1400m) over more distance during ‘The Championships’.

In 2020 after scoring an upset on debut to win the Skyline Stakes, Mamaragan went on to run third in both the Golden Slipper and Inglis Sires’ trifecta results.

The form out of the 2021 Skyline Stakes was firmly franked with the runner-up Hilal going on to run second in both the Inglis’ Sires and Champagne Stakes that autumn and later winning the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes – $1 million Bondi Stakes (now defunct) double in the spring. Captivant meanwhile improved on his Skyline Stakes third that year to take out the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the mile that April.

The 2022 Skyline Stakes form was franked with the second placed Rise Of The Masses winning the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes next start.

In 2023 the Skyline Stakes again produced the Golden Slipper Stakes winner with Shinzo improving on his lead-up second to take out the Group 1. He went on to frank the form further in the spring heading south for a third in Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes results.

The Skyline Stakes 2024 form was franked with the winner, Storm Boy, running a next-up third in that year’s Golden Slipper Stakes trifecta.

The Skyline Stakes 2025 ran on Saturday March 1, 2025 at Randwick as a key Golden Slipper lead-up race and saw the Kris Lees trained Inglis Millennium winner Rivellino ($5.50) retain his undefeated status with a narrow but convincing victory.

2025 Skyline Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Skyline Stakes 2025 Tips on the Golden Slipper lead-up this autumn.

  • To Win: #2 Shaggy ($2.35 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Some very genuine Golden Slipper colts line up in a small but smart Skyline field and happy to stick with the inform favourite Shaggy chasing his fourth win from as many starts. It takes a nice type to remain unbeaten from three runs and Allan Kehoe’s Wyong based Sandbar gelding certainly looks to have a bright future. He is rising through the grades quickly and comes off a Black-Type win in the Listed Pierro Plate here a fortnight back. Easily ed for his rivals over 1100m there and the step up to 1200m looks a non-issue based on his two-length winning margin. Drops a half-kilo to 55.5kg and is drawn for a big run in gate three. Can win.

2025 Skyline Stakes Field

The Skyline Stakes field attracts a line-up of the season’s most promising two-year-old sprinters, the colts and geldings traditionally targeting a start in the Golden Slipper Stakes field.

Skyline Stakes History

The Skyline Stakes has been run since 1979 as a Golden Slipper Stakes lead-up. The race is named in honour of the 1958 Golden Slipper winner Skyline who also won that season’s Australian Derby.

The race has taken place over a number of different Sydney racetracks over its history including Canterbury Park, Rosehill, Warwick Farm and its current home at Randwick Racecourse. It began as a Principal Race (1979) before upgrades to Listed (1980-86), Group 3 (1987-2012) and now its current Group 2 (2013 onwards) status.

Notable recent Skyline Stakes winners include Shogun Lodge (1999), Choisir (2002), Dance Hero (2004), Snitzel (2005), Manhattan Rain (2009), Hinchinbrook (2010), Exosphere (2015), Microphone (2019), and Storm Boy (2024).
