Previously run in February on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, the event was moved to its own feature race meeting in mid-March in 2025 taking place in Melbourne on the same date Sydney hosts the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.

The Peter Young Stakes is a middle-distance race run over 1800m under weight-for-age conditions and is worth $500,000 as of 2025. It is one of the first weight-for-age races at the carnival run over a distance greater than 1400m and so attracts a quality field of runners seeking a bit more distance.

The other key event on the Peter Young Stakes Day card is the $1 million The Showdown (1200m) open only to Two-Years-Old, VOBIS Sires eligible horses.

Horses running in the Peter Young Stakes may have previously contested the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and or the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m), while any three-year-old contenders may come via the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).

The Peter Young Stakes is also an ideal lead-up to the premier weight-for-age race of the carnival, the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), held a fortnight later at Flemington. Fiorente (2014) was the last horse to do the Peter Young Stakes – Australian Cup double.

The Peter Young Stakes has been a terrific guide to the Australian Cup over the years with many other champions of the Australian turf winning both races including Pompeii Ruler (2007), Lonhro (2004), Northerly (2002 & 2003), Istidaad (1999), Dane Ripper (1998), Durbridge (1994 & 1995), and Let’s Elope (1992).

More recently the 2019 Peter Young Stakes winner Avilius went on to complete the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes – Tancred Stakes double in Sydney.

In 2021 Homesman improved on a lead-up third in the Peter Young Stakes results to win that season’s Australian Cup.

The 2022 Peter Young Stakes form was franked with the winner Cascadian going on to win that autumn’s Group 1 All Aged Stakes in Sydney. The third place-getter Emissary meanwhile was huge that spring finishing runner-up to Gold Trip in Flemington’s $8 million Melbourne Cup results.

Gold Trip returned to run second in the 2023 Peter Young Stakes before a subsequent victory in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes and third in that spring’s Caulfield Cup results.

Gold Trip was back again in the 2024 Peter Young Stakes finishing third first-up behind Campionessa (1st) and another former Melbourne Cup winner in Vow And Declare (2nd).

This season’s edition of the Peter Young Stakes 2025 ran on Saturday March 15, 2025 at Caulfield Racecourse, having moved from the Blue Diamond Stakes Day card in February to mid-March for the first time, and was in a brilliant return to racing by Ciaron Maher’s $10 million earning mare Pride Of Jenni ($3.80).

  • To Win: #6 Zardozi ($2.10 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Impossible not to stick with Zardozi in this small six-horse Peter Young Stakes field with the Godolphin raced mare having more than proved herself against much tougher competition during the spring. The ultra-consistent Kingman four-year-old may be a year between wins, but she was so solid last prep with elite level runs in events including The Metropolitan (2nd), Caulfield Cup (4th) and most notable the Melbourne Cup (4th). The former VRC Oaks champ is third-up now and coming off an eye-catching third in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes over the Flemington mile a fortnight back. She’ll relish the 1800m and is the one to beat in gate two with Jamie Melham retaining the ride.

Peter Young Stakes / St George Stakes History

The St George Stakes is one of the older Australian thoroughbred races having first run in 1900 when Parthian claimed victory. It began as a Principal race run over nine furlongs and continued under the same status and distance right up until 1973 when Australia adopted the metric system and converted the race distance to 1800m. Through that time there was only one year when the St George Stakes was not held, 1921.

In 1979 the St George Stakes was elevated to Group 2 status and the race length was dramatically shortened to 1200m for one year. The following year in 1980 the distance reverted back to 1800m. In 1982 the distance decreased to 1600m, then in 1983 it was run over 1800m, in 1984 it shortened again to 1600m for four years until 1988 when it went back to the distance it remains today 1800m, except for one year in 1995 it was run over 2000m.

In 2022 jockey Damien Oliver rode his record sixth Peter Young Stakes winner in Cascadian.

It has been known as the Peter Young Stakes since 2012.

In 2023 the event took place at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown, on the Hillside course with renovations happening at Caulfield.

In 2025 the Peter Young Stakes was won by Pride Of Jenni in her brilliant return to racing following a bleeding attack from the spring prior.
