Moreton Cup News

Held on the Queensland Oaks Day, the Group 2 QTC Cup is now known as the Moreton Cup and is one of the key Group status races on the card held at Eagle Farm Racecourse in late May or early June during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

The race offers $300,000 in prize money and was previously contested over 1300m before being reduced to 1200m in 2017. From 2017-2019 the event ran at Doomben Racecourse under set weights plus penalties conditions, with no 2020 running due to COVID-19.

In 2021 the Moreton Cup retained the 1200m distance but returned to Eagle Farm to run on Queensland Oaks Day with racing at the meeting headlined by the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m).

The 2022 Moreton Cup form was franked with the race’s first two-time winner going on to finish a brave third that spring in November’s Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) at Flemington, while Kementari ran third in both the Moreton Cup and $3 million Winners Stakes that season.

In 2023 the Moreton Cup runner-up, Far Too Easy, went on to finish third in Sydney’s $2 million The Kosciuszko race that spring.

The 2024 Moreton Cup form was franked with the winner, Vilana, going on to run a brave next-up third in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap results.

The Moreton Cup 2025 runs at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday June 7, 2025 as part of Brisbane’s Queensland Oaks Day card.

2025 Moreton Cup Field

The Moreton Cup field attracts a smart line-up of winter sprinters that may have had a lead-up run earlier in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival in a race like the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben a fortnight before and is announced the Wednesday of race week.

2025 Moreton Cup Nominations

The official Moreton Cup 2025 nominations close the Monday leading-up to Queensland Oaks Day and will be released below once early entries are taken by Racing Queensland.

QTC Cup / Moreton Cup History

First won by Famoso Gris in 1979, the QTC Cup was originally a 1200m sprint until 2005 when it was changed to its current distance of 1300m. Not held in 1988 or 1999, the Group 2 event was a Group 3 event until 1983. From 2017 the race became known as the Moreton Cup and that year was contested over 1200m at Doomben (instead of Eagle Farm).

In 2022 Baller made history with his successful title defence to become the first ever dual Moreton Cup winner.
