The Group 2 race is open only to fillies and mares aged three years and older, is run at set weights plus penalties and offers $300,000 in total prize money as of 2024. Runners may come into the Millie Fox Stakes field first-up or off an earlier autumn run.
The Millie Fox Stakes shares its race card with two other Group 2 races: the Group 2 $400,000 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) for the young Golden Slipper Stakes hopefuls.
Many of the better performed female gallopers out of the Millie Fox Stakes will continue onto bigger things in the autumn such as a run in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) in March.
Daysee Doom (2018) and Zougotcha (2024) are the latest mares to complete the Millie Fox Stakes – Coolmore Classic double.
The 2023 Millie Fox Stakes form was franked with the winner Electric Girl running third in that year’s Canterbury Stakes results, while the Millie Fox third place-getter Roots continued on to win the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes that prep before a Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara second in Brisbane in the winter.

Tipping a first-up runner at value odds in the Millie Fox with Chris Waller’s former Group 1 winner, Hinged, to salute. She took out the 2022 Surround Stakes before a huge gap between victories before she broke the drought in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes at Flemington to see out her spring last time in. The now six-year-old Worthy Cause mare may not boast the best winning strike-rate but she is used to performing in top company and racing competitively. She’s been Group 2 placed by a narrow margin fresh in Sydney previously and this is a great distance for her (3:2-1-0). Millie Fox Stakes History
The inaugural edition of the Millie Fox Stakes was held in 1996, with Chlorophyll taking out the race that year. The race is named after Millie Fox, the wife of renowned owner and breeder Stan Fox, for whom the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes – now Callander-Presnell – was previously named after. Millie was a big fan of horse racing and took over management of her husband’s Nebo Lodge Stables following his death.
Initially a listed race, the Millie Fox Stakes was upgraded to a Group 3 event in 2007 and held that status until 2013. For the 2013 edition of the race, it was upgraded to Group 2. From its inception until 2006 the race was held over a distance of 1200m, as opposed to today’s 1300m. The race name has changed slightly over the years, varying from Millie Fox Plate to Millie Fox Handicap, but always retaining the name of Millie Fox.
Notable Millie Fox Stakes winners include Tivoli Dancer (2005), Montana Flyer (2010, 2011), Red Tracer (2012, 2013, 2014), First Seal (2016), In Her Time (2017), Savatiano (2020), and Zougotcha (2024).
