Tancred Stakes Day 2025 was called off on Saturday due to heavy rainfall with all 10 races, including the 2025 Emancipation Stakes, postponed until Tuesday April 1. Click here for the full story.
Named in honour of the former champion mare Emancipation, the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes is a set weights plus penalties race for fillies and mares held in late March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Run over 1500m and offering $300,000 in prize money, the Emancipation Stakes moved to Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in 2014 and now takes place on Tancred Stakes Day.
The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 $1.5 million Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m). Along with the Emancipation Stakes, the other Group 2 act on the card is the Tulloch Stakes (2000m) for ATC Derby types.
Runners in the Emancipation Stakes field may come via a run in a race like the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at the same track / distance a fortnight earlier.
After the Group 2 a nice option for the best out of the Emancipation Stakes is a Royal Randwick run during ‘The Championships’ in the Group 1 Queen Of the Turf Stakes (1600m) and Amanpour (2nd in 2015) was the last Emancipation Stakes graduate to go on and win that Group 1.
The Emancipation Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
The 2022 Emancipation Stakes form was franked with the winner Promise Of Success returning in the spring to win the $2 million The Invitation race.
In 2023 the Emancipation Stakes winner Roots went on to run second that winter in Brisbane’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
The 2023 Emancipation Stakes also produced that year’s next-up Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner with runner-up Atishu going on to claim the Group 1. Atishu also won the Group 1 Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington that spring.
The Emancipation Stakes 2025 ran on Tuesday April 1, 2025 at Rosehill Gardens as a key lead-up to the Queen Of The Turf Stakes after being postponed due to heavy rainfall in Sydney on Saturday and was won in an impressive upset by the grey Lekvarte ($18).

Tipping the recent success of John O’Shea & Tom Charlton to continue in the Emancipation Stakes this year with class, Group 1 placed filly 15. SNOW IN MAY looking the value. This lovely young daughter of The Autumn Sun takes on the older mares here with confidence off a last start Listed Canberra Guineas win over 1400m at the start of the month. She is third-up now and more than capable of this level if she races anything like her spring form when second in the Group 2 Tea Rose and third in the Group 1 Flight Stakes over the Randwick mile behind Lady Shenandoah. That form has been firmly franked with the Flight Stakes winning filly winning all three starts this prep including the Group 1 Coolmore Classic last start. Snow In May gets to 1500m now carrying just 53kg from a favourable barrier five draw. Kerrin McEvoy comes back aboard having partnered her in the big spring races coming close. Can win.

Emancipation Stakes History
First held in 1985, the Emancipation Stakes was first won by Aspirations when it was a Listed race. In 1996 it became a Group 3 event until 1999 when it was elevated to Group 2 status. R.S. Dye is the only jockey to have managed six wins in the event between years 1988 to 1999.
The race is named in honour of Emancipation. Emancipation was a mare who only raced as a three and four-year-old however her racing career was outstanding. She won 19 out of 28 starts and all seven of her Group 1 wins were in Sydney.
There have been three dual winners of the race in the past decade with: Skyerush (2012-13), Catkins (2014-15), and Zanbagh (2016-17).

In 2022 the Emancipation Stakes was moved from Rosehill on Saturday the 26th of March to Newcastle on Monday the 28th of March due to unsafe Heavy track conditions and rainfall.
