The Group 2 Dane Ripper Quality, now known as the Dane Ripper Stakes, is one of the feature races traditionally held on Stradbroke Handicap Day at Eagle Farm Racecourse during the annual Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Conducted on a Saturday in early-mid June, the 1300m (as of 2021) set weights plus penalties showdown for fillies and mares is worth $300,000 in prize money and is one of a host of Group acts on the richest race day of the carnival.

The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and the Group 1 J.J. Atkins. The Dane Ripper Stakes meanwhile is one of three Group 2 races on the program along with the Brisbane Cup for the stayers and a new feature event – the $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m).

A nice lead-up race to the Dane Ripper Stakes was previously the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1300m) at Eagle Farm a fortnight earlier – which is now run as the $500,000 Magic Millions National Classic over a mile the weekend before – while contenders may also come out of races like the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide.

Fillies & mares that run well in the Dane Ripper Stakes usually back-up at the end of the month in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), which is the last major race of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. The Dane Ripper Stakes – Tattersall’s Tiara double has been achieved in recent years by Red Tracer (2013), Cosmic Endeavour (2014) and Invincibella (2019) who also won the 2018 edition of the Dane Ripper Stakes.

The 2022 Dane Ripper Stakes form was franked with the winner Palaisipan running third next start in the Tatt’s Tiara results.

The 2024 Dane Ripper Stakes ran on Saturday June 15, 2024 at Eagle Farm Racecourse and was won in style by the Chris Waller-trained C’est Magique ($5.50).

  • To Win: #4 Coco Jamboo ($10 at time of publish) – BET NOW

This edition of the Dane Ripper shapes up to be an open and intriguing race, and I’m leaning towards Coco Jamboo for the value. The Snowden stable’s European import is in her second Australian run and appears poised for a breakout performance. Coco Jamboo made a strong debut down under, narrowly winning the Group 3 Crown (1300m) at Hawkesbury on May 4th. Though kept fresh since, she impressed in a recent trial. With winning form over the distance in Europe and jockey Tom Sherry retaining the ride, even the wide barrier draw doesn’t seem like a major hurdle. Her natural improvement and newfound experience make her a potential upsetter.

Dane Ripper Stakes History

Inaugurated in 2003, the Dane Ripper Stakes was originally a Listed race.

The high class of mainly locally-trained fillies and mares attracted to the winter feature however saw it gain Group 3 status in 2006.

Three years later in 2009 the event, named in honour of champion 1997 Cox Plate winner Dane Ripper who was prepared by Bart Cummings, became a Group 2 feature and since then has continued to draw quality fields. In 2017 the race took place over 1350m at Doomben with Eagle Farm not declared fit for racing.

Red Tracer (2012-13) became the first two-time Dane Ripper Stakes winner, a feat repeated later by the also Chris Waller-trained Invincibella (2018-19).

In 2020 the race was contested at weight-for-age earlier in the carnival due to COVID-19 and was won in an upset by 40/1 shot Love You Lucy.

Note: Due to COVID-19 the rescheduled Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival saw the Dane Ripper Stakes take place on the Saturday after the Stradbroke Handicap and offer a reduced $175,000 in prize money. It was also run as a weight-for-age event instead of set weights plus penalties with no edition of the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara taking place in 2020.

The distance was back down to 1300m in 2021.
