Offering $1 million in prize money, the Group 1 Doomben Cup attracts a class field of local and interstate weight-for-age hopefuls.

The best lead up race to the Doomben Cup is the Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) held two weeks earlier at the Gold Coast. The AD Hollindale Stakes / Doomben Cup double has been won by a number of horses over the years including most recently Streama (2014) and Zaaki (2021) who won the latter by seven lengths.

Zaaki returned as the $1.24 favourite in the 2022 Doomben Cup but only managed to run third in a shock defeat behind Huetor.

Horses out of the Doomben Cup may progress onto the Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m) running on Stradbroke Day from 2021 – a race previously known as the Group 2 PJ O’Shea Stakes / Eagle Farm Cup with Kenedna (2019) and star import Zaaki (2021) the latest horses to do the double.

In 2024 the Doomben Cup also produced that year’s The Q22 winner with Fawkner Park improving on his lead-up third in the Group 1.

There was no 2020 Doomben Cup due to COVID-19.

Zaaki further franked the Doomben Cup form from 2021 going on to win not only that year’s The Q22 but also a host of races over the spring including the Group 1 Underwood Stakes – Mackinnon Stakes double in Melbourne. He also returned in the autumn of 2022 and claimed the $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m).

Zaaki returned to run third in the 2022 Doomben Cup results and was back that spring running top four in a host of Group 1 events including the Cox Plate (4th) before his successful Mackinnon Stakes (now VRC Champions Stakes) title defence.

In the 2023 Doomben Cup Zaaki was back as the short-priced favourite after winning his third A.D. Hollindale Stakes but could only manage to run seventh to Huetor who made history going back-to-back in the event to become just the fourth two-time Doomben Cup winner champion.

The Doomben Cup 2023 form was franked with the third placed Kovalica going on to win the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at his next start.

The 2025 Doomben Cup runs on Saturday May 24, 2025 at Doomben Racecourse.

Zaaki ($2.25 in 2021) was the last favourite in Doomben Cup betting to salute for the punters and the first since the mare Streama (2014). Zaaki returned in 2022 as the $1.24 Doomben Cup favourite but ran a disappointing third as Huetor won in an upset at Doomben Cup odds of $16.

Huetor returned and won the 2023 Doomben Cup in another upset at $10, while Zaaki finished seventh as the $2.15 favourite that year.

There was also a notable upset in 2024 with the grey Bois D’Argent saluting at $26 Doomben Cup odds.

2025 Doomben Cup Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Doomben Cup 2025 Tips on the Brisbane Group 1 event this season.

  • To Win: #12 Pride Of Jenni ($4 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Really intriguing edition of the Doomben Cup but happy to tip PRIDE OF JENNI (1) from the inside alley to return to Group 1 winning form after a confidence boosting victory in easier grade at Caulfield last time out. Ciaron Maher’s multiple elite level winning daughter of Pride Of Dubai may be a rising eight-year-old but she showed she still had a zest for racing when carting a hefty 61kg to a dominant Black-Type win by two lengths on May 3 in Melbourne. Back to weight now and she’s a genuine WFA star at her best. First start in Queensland but is proven this way of racing including her 6.5 length romp home over eight-length Cox Plate champ Via Sistina in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth in Sydney last year at this distance. Comes off totally different form lines than expected but all reports from the stable are she’s fit and firing and looking to win again. Think she can.

2025 Doomben Cup Field

The Doomben Cup field attracts a class field of weight-for-age winter racing hopefuls each season, many coming off the AD Hollindale Stakes run at the Gold Coast earlier in the month.

A number of gallopers in the Doomben Cup field are coming off a run during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival and races like the Doncaster Mile and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick during The Championships have provided a number of Doomben Cup winners in recent years.

Zaaki (2021) was the last horse to complete the AD Hollindale Stakes – Doomben Cup double. After winning the 2022 Hollindale, Zaaki finished third in that year’s Doomben Cup results as Huetor improved on lead-up fourth in the same Gold Coast event to win the Group 1 in Brisbane in a boil-over.

In 2023 Zaaki won his third Hollindale before a disappointing seventh in the Doomben Cup that saw the reigning champ Huetor go back-to-back and improve on a lead-up second in the Hollindale that year.

The official Doomben Cup 2025 Field & Barriers are set for release on the Tuesday of race week and will be published in full below once announced by Racing Queensland.

The 2025 Doomben Cup final field is now out featuring 13 of the winter’s top staying types led in betting by Tony Gollan’s local galloper Antino coming off an impressive Group 2 Hollindale Stakes victory in the wet at the Gold Coast.

Doomben Cup History

First won by Pentheus in 1933, the Doomben Cup’s greatest horse has been Rough Habit with three consecutive wins from 1991 to 1993.

Between 1933 and 1937, the Doomben Cup race distance was 10 furlongs (approx 2000m) however this was changed to 11 furlongs (2200m) between 1938 and 1972. In 1989 it was temporarily increased to 2160m.

In 2021 the favourite Zaaki won the Doomben Cup by a record seven lengths before returning to finish a disappointing third as the beaten $1.24 favourite in 2022.

Notable Doomben Cup winners including Might And Power (1998), the mare Streama (2014), and Our Ivanhowe (2016).

In 2022 the Doomben Cup was moved to Eagle Farm Racecourse a week after to run over 2100m on Queensland Derby Day due to heavy rainfall and unsafe racing conditions at Doomben.

In 2023 Huetor became just the fourth horse in history to win multiple editions of the Doomben Cup ing Scenic Shot (2009 & 2011); Rough Habit (1991, 1992 & 1993); and Earlwood (1959 & 1960).
