Offering a lucrative $1,500,000 in prize money, the Doomben 10,000 is one of Queensland’s richest races and the weight-for-age event is now held two weeks before the Group 1 BTC Cup (1300m) – now known as the Kingsford Smith Cup.
The Group 1 BTC Cup, previously run a fortnight before, was the best lead up race to the Doomben 10,000 and prior to the scheduled Brisbane Winter Carnival race changes in 2017 the last horse to do the double was Sea Siren (2012).
In 2019 Kiwi galloper The Bostonian became the latest horse to take out the Doomben 10,000 / Kingsford Smith Cup double having won the former as a 40/1 outsider.
The new key Doomben 10,000 lead-up race is the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) run over the same distance also at weight-for-age two weeks before.
The Doomben 10,000 form was franked with the winner Eduardo going on to win a number of subsequent races including the Classique Legend (Winners) Stakes on the back of a third in the then $15 million (now $20 million) The Everest in Sydney that spring.
The Doomben 10,000 winner in 2022 Mazu franked the form returning in the spring to run placings in a host of feature races in Sydney including a third in The Everest results that October behind Giga Kick.
The form was further franked with Paulele running second in both the Doomben 10,000 and Kingsford-Smith Cup results before heading west to win the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth that summer.
In 2023 the Doomben 10,000 was won by the previous spring’s The Everest winning three-year-old Giga Kick who moved to ninth on the Australian Racing All-Time Prizemoney list with the victory.
The Doomben 10,000 form from 2023 was franked with the runner-up Over going on to win Perth’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) that summer.
The 2024 Doomben 10,000 winning mare Bella Nipotina franked the form running second in that year’s Kingsford Smith Cup and Stradbroke Handicap trifectas before winning the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara. She also came back for a huge spring headlined by her The Everest victory in Sydney. The form was further franked with the Doomben 10,000 runner-up, I Wish I Win, taking out the Kingsford Smith Cup at his next start.
The 2025 Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 ran on Saturday May 17, 2025 at Doomben Racecourse offering $1.5 million in stakes and was won in a thrilling finish by the classy Annable & Rob Archibald trained favourite Sunshine In Paris ($3.30F).

Absolute cracker of a sprint field for the Doomben 10,000, and I’m keen on SCHWARZ who’s sitting at decent odds. This O’Shea/Charlton four-year-old’s got a great win strike-rate and is chasing back-to-back Group 1s over the 1200m. First time at Doomben, but his 1200m form is killer. he smoked ’em in the William Reid, and then Jimmysstar went out and won a Group 1, so the form’s red-hot. He’s won this way before in Sydney on a wet track, so no worries coming to Brisbane. He’s been kept fresh and trialled brilliantly, even in the mud. Wide gate but got C. Williams to steer – I’m on!
2025 Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 Field
The Doomben 10,000 field up until 2017 traditionally attracted weight-for-age sprinters coming off a BTC Cup run. The race is now held a fortnight earlier as the first Group 1 of the winter in Queensland and will likely be the carnival kick-off for many horses. Gallopers may also now come into the Doomben 10,000 race field via a Victory Stakes run a fortnight earlier in Brisbane.
In 2023 the odds-on favourite Giga Kick won the Doomben 10,000 on the back of a Sydney lead-up win the month before in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).
Sunshine In Paris (3rd in 2025) was the last All Aged Stakes graduate to head to Brisbane and win the Doomben 10,000.
The official Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 field 2025 and barriers are set for release on the Wednesday of race week and will be published below as soon as announced by Racing Queensland.
The 2025 Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 final field is now out featuring a capacity line-up of top-class sprinters including two-time The Quokka champion Over, the widely drawn Sunshine In Paris coming off a Group 1 All Aged third, and last start Group 1 William Reid Stakes winner Schwarz.

Doomben 10,000 History
First won by Wallen in 1933, the race was originally named the T. M Ahearn Memorial however the name was changed when 10,000 pounds became the set amount of prize money. At this time, the Doomben 10,000 was the richest sprint race in Australia. The event was also won by the magnificent Manikato in 1979.
Originally a six-furlong (approx. 1200m) race, the distance for the Doomben 10,000 was changed to 7 furlongs (1400m) in 1942 and remained so until 1973 when it became a 1350m race.
The Doomben 10,000 race distance dropped back to the 1200m sprint in 2017, and the weight-for-age race moved forward a fortnight, so it now marks the start of Group 1 racing in Brisbane over the winter.
Star Sydney sprinter Redzel (2017) won the first 1200m edition of the rescheduled Doomben 10,000 before his The Everest – Darley Classic double that spring.
The 2020 edition of the race was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022 the Doomben 10,000 ran at Eagle Farm Racecourse due to heavy rainfall.
The 2023 Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000 results were dominated by the odds-on favourite Giga Kick who won the previous October’s The Everest.
Sunshine In Paris (2025) was the last Doomben 10,000 winning mare having won the Group 1 Champions Sprint in Melbourne the previous spring.
