2016 Underwood Stakes Betting Update: Black Heart Bart Firm Favourite

All the money in the Underwood Stakes 2016 betting markets for the Group 1 staying showdown at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday afternoon remains firmly on the Darren Weir-trained favourite Black Heart Bart.

The dual Group 1 winning son of Blackfriars is one of 10 remaining chances in the line-up for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m), the field for the clash down by one with the scratching of the injured Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Our Ivanhowe (cut leg).

After opening at $3.40 in the Underwood Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au earlier in the week, former Peth-trained galloper Black Heart Bart has been heavily ed into $2.60 to become the first six-year-old winner of the weight-for-age clash since Perlin (2005).

Two back he posted an elite level win in Melbourne taking out the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at the Caulfield track before his close second to stablemate Palentino at Flemington a fortnight ago in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

Black Heart Bart went down just a length in that mile clash from September 10, and while he’s yet to win over further than around the 1400m, the punters are coming for him to handle the 1800m in the Underwood.

The last favourite to salute for the Underwood Stakes punters though was So You Think as a four-year-old in 2010, so there could be value looking further down the markets again this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Black Heart Bart is out to be the first winning Underwood Stakes favourite since So You Think in 2010

Outside the firming favourite the other notable Underwood Stakes market mover is Awesome Rock in from $8 to $5.50.

He jumps from barrier two, which only produced a winner two years ago in Foreteller (2014) and is also the gate So You Think won from six years ago.

The gate then is ideal for the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained son of Fastnet Rock, as is the lead-up form from the stallion.

Five-year-old Awesome Rock posted an upset win from the same barrier (2) at Moonee Valley in an upset at $31 in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Name Stakes (1600m) on September 3.

He’s had the three weeks between runs heading into the Group 1, and after having two lengths to spare on the Dato’ runner-up Real Love over the mile, he should eat up the extra metres here on way to the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 22.

There’s also been a tickle of money for an Underwood Stakes win by the Lindsay Park-trained Makybe Diva Stakes third placegetter He Or She ($13 into $10) and Mick Price’s VRC Derby – Rosehill Guineas winner Tarzino ($15 into $12).

Tarzino is the right age for a win as five of the past seven Underwood Stakes winners won in their four-year-old seasons, the son of Tavistock to relish getting out over the extra metres this weekend after two unplaced spring runs over unsuitably short distances.
