Jumping from the gates only fairly, the Street Sense gelding was forced to settle well within the pack, allowing early leaders Ygritte, Sniper Fire and Nostradamus to set a noticeably quick tempo over the back straight and rounding the bend.
Finding the final straight with plenty to do, jockey Hugh Bowman maintained a line outside the pack with the classy three-year-old, steadily pushing ed his rivals and taking up the pace alongside in-form sprinter Scissor Kick; poking clear in the final 50m to secure a fourth consecutive victory and maiden at the highest level of Australian racing.
Co-trainer James Cummings remained positive of Hallowed Crown’s chances in the 2014 Golden Rose after drawing the wide and awkward barrier 14, believing his runner to be capable of repeating the impressive efforts of 2013 champion Zoustar, who famously won from the outside barrier.
Understandably thrilled to have won the 2014 Sydney Spring Carnival’s first Group 1, Cummings said Hallowed Crown’s potential leading into the future is particularly exciting following his Golden Rose victory.
“It means so much to the team; there’s a great young team behind us and it’s amazing we’ve won Sydney’s biggest racing in the spring,” Cummings said.
“This horse could be anything, there’s so much thanks to not only the staff but to the .
“That’s what the good horses have got to do, just keep taking that step. We thought he was one of the best three-year-olds on his return two weeks ago and he had to do it again, he had to make such a sustained run in that race.
“Zoustar had to do it last year and there’s shades of it this year and he could be anything, I can’t wait what we can see from him in the future.
“He’s got a turn of foot and it’s able of getting him out of trouble, so the world’s his oyster and who knows how far he can go.”
Jockey Hugh Bowman delivered a sensational ride on Hallowed Crown in the 2014 Golden Rose, and was quick to lay the praise on his classy partner.
“He’s a star and I tell you, you’ve got to give a lot of credit to Scissor Kick cause he did a lot of the work and I was able to just have the advantage of that wide draw – I had no option I had to go forward or go back,” Bowman said.
“Take nothing away from this horse; he’s a serious colt in the making. I’m so grateful to be on him and what can I say, he’s a superstar in the making.
“I worked him leading up to his last victory and I was very impressed with the horse and I rode him again this week on better ground and he went three times as good.
“I was quietly confident coming in but he needed things to pan out and they did, and like I said he’s going to keep progressing, he’s going to get better yet.”
Yet to be confirmed for a path beyond today’s impressive Golden Rose victory, Hallowed Crown has already secured more than $1 million in prize money from just four competitive starts.
