More Joyous has continued her flawless run towards the Cox Plate with a win in the Group 3 Golden Pendant at Rosehill Gardens today September 29, 2012.
The More Than Ready mare won the race by almost two lengths in front of Skyerush, who placed second, and Forarainyday, who crossed the line in third.
It was the 21st race win for More Joyous, who has had 28 career starts and amassed more than $4.45 million in prize money.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse could not contain her excitement after the race.
“(That was) just a working gallop,” Waterhouse said.
“She’s just joyous isn’t she?
“Down to the Toorak (Handicap) here we come.”
Waterhouse was not keen to reveal her pick between More Joyous and Pierro for the 2012 Cox Plate on October 27, 2012.
“It really will depend on how the Cox Plate’s run,” she said.
“And they’ve got to get there don’t they?”
More Joyous’ owner, John Singleton, was thrilled that his mare was able to an elite group of horses that had 20 or more stakes wins to their name.
“She’s part of history now,” Singleton said.
“Seven mares in 200 years have won 20 stakes races and she’s one of them.
“You expect (her to win) but when you’ve been round a long time there’s this niggling doubt something will go wrong.
“She won as she should have done.”
Nash Rawiller was aboard More Joyous for her dominant 2012 Golden Pendant win.
“She was at her brilliant best,” Rawiller said.
“(She) really felt terrific throughout the race.”
Rawiller hinted that he would choose More Joyous over Pierro if offered both rides in the 2012 Cox Plate.
“It’s a very difficult question,” he said.
“This mare’s been so good to me over four or five years.
“At this point in time I’d be more than happy with the great mare.”
