2025 Sydney Cup Tips & Best Bets

Chasing this weekend’s insider Sydney Cup 2025 tips at Randwick? Races.com.au has the goods right here! We’ve done the full form on the autumn’s premier staying showdown and have our expert selections and best bets for Saturday’s two-mile Group 1 feature. Check out which gallopers we’re putting our money on to run in the money!

The $2 million Sydney Cup (3200m) field has attracted a strong line-up of stayers from around the country with the punters pretty keen to back the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott trained favourite Alalcance who is short-odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to make it four-from-four this prep.

So, will the gallant grey mare keep the wins going up in distance or is there value further down the Sydney Cup betting markets in the likes of the spring’s Caulfield Cup hero Duke De Sessa or Godolphin‘s gun Melbourne Cup fourth placegetter Zardozi?

The Favourite: #8 Alalcance ($2.80 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Mares don’t have the best Sydney Cup record, but Alalcance this year is looking a huge chance to be the first since Etah James (2020) to beat home the boys in the two-mile classic.

This striking grey daughter of Mastercraftsman is the right age to win as a 5YO and she is absolutely airborne.

The quick back-up off her dominant Group 2 Chairman’s Quality win by nearly two lengths here over 2600m suits as she’s fit and firing on all cylinders.

Should easily see out the 3200m off of that. She’s won all three this prep and just doesn’t know how to run a bad race.

Loves Randwick (3:2-1-0) and, even with a 2kg penalty, gets in on just 52kg here. That’s a nice drop from the 56.5kg she carried with ease seven days earlier.

Gets conditions to suit, Tim Clark stays on, and she looks every chance to do the double Circle Of Fire completed last year.

Looks very well placed and just needs to get into the right spot from the draw to salute for the punters.

Wins.

Best Value: #1 Duke De Sessa ($9 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Duke De Sessa, the Caulfield Cup winner from last spring, could represent excellent value in this year’s Sydney Cup at Randwick.

Trained by three-time Sydney Cup winner Ciaron Maher, the six-year-old is at a nice price of around $10 in the markets, offering the stable a chance for back-to-back wins in the staying feature.

While the 56.5kg top weight and barrier two, which he’ll have to work to stay out of trouble from, present a slight challenge, his proven Group 1 ability suggests he has the class to overcome it.

History cautions against such a weight – Mourayan in 2013 was the last to carry more than 55kg to victory – but the son of Lope De Vega has shown signs he could buck that trend.

The in-form jockey Harry Coffey continues his partnership with this fit galloper, who surprised with a first-up Group 3 JRA Plate (1600m) win at Caulfield (60kg) in February over what many thought would be unsuitably short.

Subsequent second-place finishes in strong races like the Australian Cup Prelude (59.5kg) and the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (59kg) further highlight his credentials for this two-mile contest.

With a favorable map and seemingly underestimated by punters, Duke De Sessa shapes as a compelling each-way proposition.

Each Way.

Long Roughie: #13 Mostly Cloudy ($46 at time of publish) – BET NOW

For the big value in the markets there’s some solid stats about dour stayer Mostly Cloudy who has the ability to run better than the odds suggest here up to two-miles.

The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young trained gelding got his fair share of media coverage in the spring heading into the time-honoured Melbourne Cup race but jockey Karis Teetan said post the horse’s disappointing 18th place finish that he “lacked the class” to challenge.

While they are run over the same distance, class-wise the Sydney Cup and Melbourne Cup races are world’s apart and don’t see Mostly Cloudy out of contention this weekend by any means.

He has been racing in better form this prep and comes in with confidence after running in the money three times on the trot.

Most recently he placed third carrying 56kg behind Deakin at Flemington in the Listed Roy Higgins (2600m).

After settling mid-field he ran on strongly late and can do the same over 3200m, which he has previous winning form at, and dropping back to the 50kg light weight.

Gets into gate eight with emergencies out, which is the most successful gate in this race in the past 30 odds years.

Place.
