The action of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival hits fever pitch at Randwick on Saturday for Day 1 of The Championships including the running of the time-honoured 2025 Doncaster Mile.
- Update: 12. Celestial Legend (11) has been scratched. Click here for the full story.

The Group 1 $4 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) has drawn a typically top-class line-up of middle-distance stars with an open market at Ladbrokes.com.au.
The latest Doncaster Mile odds online have Gringotts as the narrow $6.50 favourite with Ciaron Maher‘s Per Incanto five-year-old chasing back-to-back wins.
The gun gelding saluted in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes in a thrillingly close victory over Fangirl at Rosehill last time out.
He now chases the George Ryder / Doncaster Mile double last completed by the mighty Winx (2016).
Maher chases his first Doncaster victory and Gringotts will carry 55.5kg, down from 59kg at WFA last start, with the horse looking to add to his imposing 1600m record of four wins from five starts over the distance to date.
Tommy Berry, looking for his second Doncaster success, has ridden Gringotts for the horse’s past seven starts and continues associations from a nice gate six draw this weekend.
Linebacker is the other best in Doncaster Mile betting also now at $6.50 for the win with the John O’Shea & Tom Charlton trained Super Seth gelding in on just 49kg from barrier 14 with the in-form Zac Lloyd in the saddle.
The youngster is out to be the eighth three-year-old Doncaster Mile winner since 2005 attempting back-to-back wins for the age group after the 2024 win by Celestial Legend.
At his latest he beat home Broadsiding by a half-length in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas at this track and trip, the form of which was subsequently franked with Broadsiding atoning with a Rosehill Guineas success.
Celestial Legend did the Randwick Guineas / Doncaster Mile double 12 months ago and there is money for Linebacker to repeat the feat this autumn.
The other danger challenging for favouritism at $7.50 for the Godolphin stable is recent All-Star Mile champion at Flemington, Tom Kitten.
James Cummings‘ smart Harry Angel four-year-old will carry 55.5kg from gate one with Ben Melham aboard once again.
After his impressive All-Star Mile success over Mr Brightside, Tom Kitten ran in the George Ryder finishing only 1.45 lengths fifth to Gringotts and he’ll be right in the frame late again here according to the markets.
This year’s Doncaster Mile top-weight with 56.5kg is a stablemate of Gringotts with the fellow Maher trained Another Wil drawn barrier 18 with Jamie Melham, who rode Cascadian to victory in the race in 2021, riding.
While on paper that looks a nasty draw, plenty of Doncaster Mile winners have won from wider out including Brutal (2019) and Mr Brightside (2022) who both won from gate 18.
Another Wil is at $9.50 to win.
Drawn even wider one the outside of Another Wil is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott trained
Royal Patronage ($8.50) who races third-up on Saturday.
This savvy import, third in last year’s Epsom Handicap, won the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) when resuming two back before a close fourth under a length beaten in the George Ryder giving him the right form lines for a potential Doncaster trophy.
Trainer Chris Waller boasts an imposing six previous Doncaster Mile wins, one off the record co-held by the late Tommy Smith and his daughter Gai Waterhouse, and this year he will saddle up five in the field.
The best fancied of the Waller contingent is Firestorm ($9) in gate eight for Jay Ford with the talented Kiwi bred mare coming off a Group 1 Coolmore Classic second at Rosehill.
Some potential value Doncaster Mile contenders this year include Gavin Bedggood‘s evergreen eight-year-old Just Folk ($26) on the quick back-up from his all-the-way Prelude win on Tuesday and Bjorn Baker‘s ultra-consistent Group 2 Ajax Stakes winner Iowna Merc ($51) chasing a hat-trick.
The 2025 The Star Doncaster Mile is set to run as Randwick Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEDT) on Saturday’s 10-race card.
