The punters had to wait a few extra days, but the 2025 Vinery Stud Stakes results went their way with Matt Laurie‘s odds-on favourite Treasurethe Moment saluting in style at Rosehill.
Following Saturday’s washed-out meeting, the rescheduled Group 1 $750,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) ran on Tuesday with jockey Damian Lane guiding brilliant Alabama Express filly Treasurethe Moment ($1.40F) to a one length win.
The spring’s VRC Oaks champ extended her picket fence making it seven straight wins to become a dual Group 1 winner despite looking a little lost mid-race as the field spread out.
“She’s a dream horse. She’ll learn a lot today. I think she got a little bit lost. She didn’t have that trail. They spread out enough and she was sitting out on a limb with nothing really there to follow,” her trainer told Sky Thoroughbred Central.
“Looked a little bit lost but when she got into it she was really good late so she’s only going to be better for the experience.
“It is great to win another Group 1 and great to win one for Yulong.”
Lane had the eventual champion positioned third on the turn for home with the front running Powers Of Opal quickly coming back to them as they hit the straight.
When Lane asked, Treasurethe Moment quickly responded and found her way to take up the lead 300m out from the line and race well clear of her rivals late in a commanding victory in her first Sydney assignment.
“She’s very uncomplicated. She went to the barriers well and she has trained on her Sydney leg,” Lane said after the win.
“The race worked out well.”
Adding further merit to the win was Lane’s assessment that the Vinery winner would have been even better on slightly firmer going.
“She didn’t love the Heavy ground but because she’s so honest she just kept on keeping on,” he said.
“On the softer ground she didn’t quicken as well as what she normally would but she’s so honest and I think she’ll handle whatever you throw at her.
“She’ll excel, though, on firm ground.”
The Glen Thompson trained Benagil ($12) got up into second while Chris Waller‘s Snitzel filly Declichy Boulevard ($11), coming off a third in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes, fought on gamely eventually crossing third again to complete the Vinery Stud Stakes trifecta.
It is now onwards and upwards for Treasurethe Moment who targets the Group 1 $1 million Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on April 12.
“She is proven at that distance and she’s going to lap it up,” Laurie said.
“She’s just got better and better.
“We have been here (in Sydney) for nearly a fortnight, and she lost a little bit of weight on the way up and wasn’t completely settled but as we got deeper, she got better and better and I was pleased with her today.
“Ten days into the Oaks will be perfect.”
Hungry Heart (2021) was the last filly to complete the Vinery Stud Stakes / Australian Oaks double.
