The fillies were on top of the Golden Slipper 2025 results yet again with the progressive Michael Freedman trained Marhoona defeating one-time favourite Wodeton with the luckless Tempted third in this year’s thrilling edition of the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.

Heading the Rosehill racing action on Saturday, the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) was decided in a close finish to continue the trend set in the earlier elite levels on the card.
Jockey Damian Lane, who celebrated his second Slipper success after riding fellow filly Kiamichi to victory in 2019, timed his run on this year’s champion to perfection.
Having settled mid-field throughout he began to slice his way through the field with a furlong to go before Marhoona ($8) hit the lead 100m out from the line.
Waller’s smart colt Wodeton ($7) coming off a Todman Stakes second tried his heart out in a gutsy finish but was nosed out by the winning filly who was sensational under pressure on the big stage.
“Yeah, huge thrill,” Freedman, who also co-trained the 2021 Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside with Richard Freedman, told Sky Thoroughbred Central.
“You know, we’ve been through the ups and downs with the family over a lot of years with these sort of good results, bad results.
“But, yeah, it’s a huge thrill for my team.”
Marhoona continued her impressive rise through the ranks winning the 2025 Golden Slipper Stakes third-up for her second career success after a winning debut at Canterbury in early February and a lead-up second to Tempted in the Group 2 Resiling Stakes.
“If I’m being honest, I said to a few people, earlier today, I thought maybe it would have been nice to have had one more run under our belt, but she’s a special filly,” Freedman itted.
“When she won at Canterbury at first start, she ripped half a foot off winning that race, and I thought you’re tough.
“And she bounced back from it, went to the Reisling a month later, and it’s a bit of an unusual preparation, I guess, going into a Slipper at your third start.
“But, yeah, she’s a special filly.”
James Cummings‘ Reisling winner Tempted ($4.80F) meanwhile flashed home late in the Slipper but ran out of time with some slight interference at a crucial stage costing her the race.
“She ran incredibly,” Tempted’s jockey Blake Shinn said after the loss.
“I think she should have arguably won the race.
“Momentarily got our run impeded when North England and Bellazaine came together.
“I think that cost us the race. A tough one to swallow. She ran a great race.”
She eventually crossed 0.65 lengths back third as the beaten favourite to complete the close Golden Slipper Stakes trifecta.
Today’s Slipper winning hoop Lane was also full of post-race praise for Marhoona.
“She was great,” Lane said.
“She’s obviously been prepped perfectly for this, just peaking on the day. Not often you come up with a plan and execute it perfectly, well in Group 1s anyway.
“It really played out how we thought it might, and she was great.
“She just was there to be beaten at the 100m and Wodeton got to us, she really stuck at it, so very brave.”
Fillies have now won six of the past nine editions of the Golden Slipper.
The race was not without drama however with the Bjorn Baker trained Lucky Vega filly Within The Law getting spooked in the early stages and went through the fence.
Jockey Jason Collett fell to the ground but was back on his feet escaping without serious injury, while Within The Law also looked to have come through the incident okay.
“Golden Slipper runner Within The Law has a minor abrasion to her near hind leg but at this stage she seems clinically ok, and we will continue to closely monitor her,” Bjorn Baker Racing announced on X.
“Thankful Jason & filly are ok.”
The Group 2 $1 million Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 12 presents as a potential next-up option for Marhoona should Freedman and connections opt to race on with the still untapped filly.
Marhoona sits top of the latest all-in 2025 Percy Sykes Stakes odds online at $4 through Ladbrokes.com.au with Tempted the next best at $5 in the potential rematch.
