Master Sydney-based horseman Chris Waller will chase his third win in the Caulfield Cup 2024 with five remaining chances for the stable following the official third acceptances on Tuesday.
The Group 1 $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) serves as a key Melbourne Cup lead-up race and takes place on October 19.
Third acceptances for the opening leg of the spring cups double have left 33 potential contenders including five for the Waller who has prepared two Caulfield Cup winners in Verry Elleegant (2020) and Durston (2022).
Heading Waller’s Caulfield Cup third acceptors is recent Group 1 Underwood Stakes champ Buckaroo who heads all-in betting through Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.50.
The in-form son of was far from disgraced last weekend when narrowly beaten in a late two-horse battle by stablemate Via Sistina in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.
The other third acceptors for the two-time winning trainer are triple figure outsider Valiant King ($101), sco Guardi ($34), his Turnbull Stakes winning mare Via Sistina ($21), and Land Legend ($8).
Hong Kong-based Zac Purton has been cleared to ride Land Legend in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups this spring with the Irish import impressive winning Sydney’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on Epsom Day.
The other single figure chance in the updated Caulfield Cup odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au post-third acceptances is Eliyass.
The consistent Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained imported Le Harve six-year-old was eye-catching running third in the Turnbull Stakes and is being kept safe in the markets at $5 despite being yet to win over further than 2000m.
Of the 33 Caulfield Cup third acceptors just one international raider remains in contention with Japanese visitor Warp Speed currently listed as a $17 shot to beat home the locals.
The 2024 Caulfield final acceptances close at 10:30am (AEDT) on Tuesday October 15.
