2024 Caulfield Cup Second Acceptances: 57 Remaining Runners

There are 57 remaining runners for the Caulfield Cup 2024 this spring following second acceptances for the first of the ‘Big 3’ features.

The latest round of acceptances for some of the key Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors closed on Tuesday including those for the time-honoured Group 1 $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) to run on October 19.

Down from 87 first acceptors, the list of potential Caulfield Cup contenders for the opening leg of the Spring Cups double is starting to shorten.

Heading updated odds on the 2024 Caulfield Cup horses still in the mix at $8 through Ladbrokes.com.au is Warmonger for Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr.

The now four-year-old was one of the gun three-year-old stayers last season when runner-up in the SA Derby before romping home by over 10 lengths in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m).

He caught the eye in his four-year-old debut on September 14 making up ground to place fourth first-up behind weight-for-age champion Mr Brightside in Flemington’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

There will only be improvement to come over the coming weeks as Warmonger gets out over a more suitable trip, and he is currently well positioned weight-wise allocated 53.5kg for the Caulfield Cup.

Japan's Warp Speed is the only international left in the mix for the 2024 Caulfield Cup following second acceptances

Just one international is left in Caulfield Cup contention this season with Japan’s Noboru Takagi-trained Warp Speed looking to potentially beat home the locals in the Melbourne Cup lead-up.

The raider is at $26 in Caulfield Cup all-in markets.

Along with Warmonger the other favourite Caulfield Cup second acceptors according to markets are the consistent Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained French-bred Eliyass and the Chris Waller-trained Buckaroo who was enormous in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) last weekend.

To date, Sydney’s leading lady of racing Gai Waterhouse has won the Caulfield Cup just once with Descarado back in 2010.

She and co-trainer Bott look to have a genuine winning hope this season with Eliyass having put together five straight wins now including all three of his starts down under.

The six-year-old saluted on the weekend at Randwick in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) with 56kg and looks to be going from strength to strength in Australia.

Just Fine, Military Mission, Serpentine, and last weekend’s $1 million 7 Stakes third placed Royal Patronage are the other Caulfield Cup runners remaining for the Waterhouse/Bott stable.

Buckaroo meanwhile was a surprise 3.5 length winner at the Caulfield track in the Underwood.

He is one of 11 Caulfield Cup second acceptances for Waller who chases his third success following that of the ill-fated subsequent Melbourne Cup winning mare Verry Elleegant (2020) and Durston (2022).

The Caulfield Cup 2024 third acceptances are open until Tuesday October 8 at midday local time.
