The 2024 Ladbrokes Cox Plate nominations closed on Tuesday with 137 weight-for-age hopefuls heading towards the 104th edition of the $5 million classic at Moonee Valley on October 26 including the all-in favourite Pride Of Jenni.

The second of the ‘Big 3’ Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors, the Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) is the Australasian weight-for-age championship and always attract the elite of the elite when it comes to middle distance spring stars.
This year looks no exception with an outstanding list of Cox Plate nominees including Ciaron Maher’s multiple Group 1 winning mare Pride Of Jenni who was last seen winning Sydney’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes by a historic 6.5 lengths during April’s The Championships.

Pride Of Jenni is also the reigning All-Star Mile champ really coming into her own over the past season and gets her first shot at Cox Plate glory this spring.

Maher co-trained the ill-fated 2020 Cox Plate champion Sir Dragonet and so chases his second victory in the ‘race where legends are made’ this season.
Along with the all-in favourite he has a dozen other Cox Plate 2024 nominees giving him 13 in total, equal with Chris Waller of Winx fame.
One of the most famous Cox Plate winning trainers, Waller won the event four times on the trot with the mighty mare Winx (2015-18) and returns in 2024 chasing his fifth with 13 nominees.
The Waller contingent is led market-wise by his seven-year-old Fastnet Rock mare Via Sistina, the import having won the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes in her Australian debut back in March before finishing next best to Pride Of Jenni in the Queen Elizabeth.
The Cox Plate has a rich history of attracting top-class international horses.
Four overseas raiders have conquered Australia’s weight-for-age championship, showcasing the global appeal of the race.
Ireland’s Adelaide (2014) and State Of Rest (2021), trained by Aidan O’Brien and Joseph O’Brien respectively, along with Japan’s Lys Gracieux (2019) and Hong Kong’s Romantic Warrior (2023) have etched their names into Cox Plate folklore.
These victories highlight the race’s status as a truly international contest.
In 2024 the Cox Plate nominations attracted 20 northern hemisphere-trained raiders including a bumper 12 from the Aidan O’Brien stables as he chases his second success.
O’Brien’s Cox Plate entries this season are: Auguste Rodin, Chief Little Rock, Content, Diego Velazquez, Grosvenor Square, Hans Andersen, Illinois, Los Angeles, Luxembourg, Opera Singer, Port Fairy, and Ylang Ylang.
The other raiders looking to steal the silverware from the locals are UK’s Brian Meehan-trained Jayarebe; the Charlie Appleby-trained stablemates Measured Time and Nations Pride; Ireland’s White Birch; and four Japanese gallopers with the Tetyana Furdetska-trained Country’s Light, Hishi Iguazu for Noriyuki Hori, the Takashi Saito-trained Killer Ability, and Prognosis.
Currently Prognosis sits equal second in the latest Cox Plate futures markets at $8 to Lys Gracieux who became the first Japanese-trained Cox Plate winner in 2019.
Of the 34 three-year-old Cox Plate nominations the best fancied in the current markets is the James Cummings-trained Too Darn Hot colt Broadsiding, the Godolphin galloper having won the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm.
The Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained Mr Brightside meanwhile is the best out of last year’s Cox Plate results returning for another shot at the title, the 2023 runner-up having also run seventh back in 2022.
The class of the Cox Plate 2024 nominations is highlighted by the fact there are 32 individual Group 1 winners in the mix.
