One of four elite level Sydney races on the card, the Group 1 $4 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) is shaping up as a beauty.
We’re likely to see a wet edition of the time-honoured clash with plenty of rain on the forecast, so keeping an eye out for the proven mudlarks will be key to Doncaster Mile tipping this autumn.
Ciaron Maher’s Prelude winner Another Wil on a four-straight winning streak and right down in weight heads the latest Doncaster Mile odds at $3.60 through Ladbrokes.com.au to keep the victories coming.
He is a dominant favourite with the punters shying away from an upset, but that opens up the value in Doncaster Mile betting for us!
Read on to see the milers we’re backing and sacking in The Star Doncaster Mile 2024.
The Favourite: #18 Another Wil ($3.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW
The punters are coming for the clear top elect with Another Wil up notably in grade but doing everything right in the lead-up to suggest he can back-up from his Prelude win and do the double. The Ciaron Maher-trained son of Street Boss is a lightly-raced four-year-old with plenty of upside chasing win number five on the trot. He is putting together an ultra-consistent record and was good in his Group race debut last weekend saluting in the Group 3 Prelude at Rosehill over 1500m by 2.25 lengths with 53kg. He is down to 50kg for the Group 1, but has a wide draw to overcome. He is a genuine miler with a great 1600m record and is proven in the wet, but think he looks a little short to take for the win with confidence. Each Way.
Best Bet: #12 Lady Laguna ($10 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Love the value on offer for a forgotten mare in the mix with Lady Laguna at double-figures to keep her outstanding autumn form going. The Annabel Neasham-trained four-year-old daughter of Overshare has been excellent winning four of her past six starts including the $1 million MM Fillies & Mares race at the Gold Coast in January. She was second to Zougotcha in a Group 2 Millie Fox before winning the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) with a dominant 1.25 length effort over Think About It here on March 9. George Ryder second to Veight beaten narrowly last time out from a wide gate with 57kg over 1500m. She is a Group 1 winner at Randwick, will run the mile without a worry, drops notably in weight to 51kg, and has Michael Dee coming aboard. Has run well on Heavy going a number of times and looks the value. Can surprise.
Best Roughie: #5 Zougotcha ($16 at time of publish) – SCRATCHED
There are lots of runners in this field that look way overs including Zougotcha at 15/1 at time of publish who is one of the best wet trackers in the mix and coming in with plenty of confidence. Back-to-back wins in the Group 2 Millie Fox (1300m) and Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) against her own kind at Rosehill. Latest she carted 57kg. Into the Doncaster Mile field for the Waller stable with 53.5kg, even with her 2kg penalty. J-Mac is off but Craig Williams is an excellent replacement. Barrier is a little bit of a concern, but she is at her best on Soft – Heavy going and is rock hard fit and unbeaten this prep. Place.
THINK. IS THIS A BET YOU REALLY WANT TO PLACE?
