After a number of earlier, frustrating close calls at Group 1 level Churchill four-year-old Attrition ($26) showed true grit to extend his neck right on the line and hold out the better-fancied Queenslander Antino ($5), winner of that year’s Group 3 Sandown Stakes, in a thrilling photo-finish Toorak Handicap 2023 result on Caulfield Guineas Day.
A further length back third to complete the Toorak Handicap trifecta was the roughie of the lot, the Michael Moroney-trained Bankers Choice at 200/1.
It was an emotional result as young trainer Mitchell Freedman and winning hoop Beau Mertens both celebrated their maiden Group 1 victory.
The Toorak was Attrition’s breakthrough stakes victory and he atoned for his narrow second as a three-year-old in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in the autumn.
He also further franked the form out of the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) having run a lead-up 13th to Alligator Blood who won the 2023 Might And Power by two lengths over the 2000m on Guineas Day.
