The punters’ money is on the undefeated Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Written Tycoon filly Coolangatta to take out the world’s richest race for juveniles fresh and race her way into the history books.
The bonny bay is three-from-three to date, already a dual Group 3 winner and was last seen narrowly saluting as the odds-on pick in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in mid-January.
No Magic Millions Classic winner has gone on to win the Slipper without another lead-up run, but the team gave kept Coolangatta fresh as she attempst to do the double.
Drawn out in barrier 14 pre-scratchings with ace Sydney-based hoop James McDonald to ride, the well-backed filly is at $4.50 in the latest Golden Slipper betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
There may be a capacity Golden Slipper field assembled for the $5 million showdown on Saturday, but just three other youngsters the favourite under $10 in betting.
The $7 second elect is the aforementioned Sejardan in gate seven with the in-form Jason Collett riding.
Beaten just once in his four previous assignments, the nicely-bred son of Sebring won the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate and $1 million Golden Gift in the spring.
He improved on a first-up third in the $2 million Inglis Millennium when returning to winning form on a Heavy (10) Randwick track in the Todman Stakes, a race that has produced plenty of recent Golden Slipper winners.
Farnan (2020) was the last to do the double and while easing somewhat from his opening quote, Sejardan remains a firm chance to be the next.
Another last start winner being kept safe in Golden Slipper betting this season is the Anthony Cummings-trained Extreme Choice filly, She’s Extreme at a firm price of $8.50.
Cummings has locked in Brett Prebble to replace Tommy Berry aboard last weekend’s Group 3 Magic Night Stakes winner at the track / distance.
Fit and ready to fire on the quick back-up, She’s Extreme is drawn favourably in barrier six and is chasing the double most recently achieved by Kiamichi (2019).
Rounding out the single-figure Slipper hopes out from $8 to $9 is the Kacy Fogden-trained Best Of Bordeaux, another unbeaten hope looking to remain so come Saturday afternoon.
The progressive Snitzel colt is two-from-two ahead of his Group 1 test with both his lead-up runs being on-speed performances at Rosehill.
On debut he blitzed his rivals in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) by over four and a half-lengths and was impressive again beating home Magic in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on February 19.
He hasn’t raced since, but was good winning a Warwick Farm hit-out on March 11 to bring him on fitness-wise and the speed demon’s trainer is confident he can win, and not just from out in front either.
The early Golden Slipper market mover backed in from $31 to $21 meanwhile is the Team Hawkes-trained Sebonack to be ridden by William Pike.
Drawn one outside the favourite in gate 15, the Capitalist colt was a Group 3 Caulfield winner on debut in early February and comes off a close fourth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).
Whether that Melbourne form-line is the one to follow north into the Slipper is the query, but at the price there are a few punters taking him as the potential value runner.
Other notable Golden Slipper market movers include: Blue Diamond third-placed Jacquinot ($14 into $12), Peter & Paul Snowden’s class filly Revolutionary Miss ($20 into $16) who was second in the same Melbourne lead-up and the widely-drawn Reisling Stakes winner Seven Veils ($31 into $26).
