PB Lawrence Stakes 2021 Results: Winner Sierra Sue to Target Memsie Stakes

The Group 1 $750,000 Memsie Stakes (1400m) back at Caulfield on August 28 shapes up as the likely next-up option for the classy Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained mare Sierra Sue following her solid victory in the 2021 P.B. Lawrence Stakes results.

Best known for her Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) win at big odds last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Flemington, the now five-year-old daughter of Darci Brahma celebrated a second career Group 2 success in the $300,000 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) putting away a good field of returning stars.

Sierra Sue was the fit horse in the race thanks to the smart move by the team to send her to Mildura three weeks ago where she carted 59kg to a two-length win in the $100,000 Mildura Cup (1400m).

Full of confidence off that victory, the mare had John Allen aboard again for the P.B. Lawrence Stakes where she settled just off the pace as Do You Reckon led the field around early.

Race favourite and dual Group 1 winner at the track and distance, Streets Of Avalon moved up to lead on the inside 650m out and was in front turning for home.

It was Streets Of Avalon and the David Brideoake-trained recent Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes winner Red Can Man at the 200m battling it out, before Allen moved up boldly aboard Sierra Sue.

Knowing he was on a mare with the fitness edge over her rivals, Allen was happy to slide out three wide with no cover and Sierra Sue ($8) got her neck in front 100m out before pulling clear to win.

In a photo for second the returning Hawkes Racing-trained Angel Of Truth ($31) – winner of the 2019 ATC Derby – came from well back to snare second in a huge late run at big odds while Red Can Man ($5) was brave holding for third off a wide run on speed throughout.

Streets Of Avalon meanwhile tiered late in the piece and faded to finish well back in eighth.

“That little trip to Mildura has brought this filly on,” co-trainer Young told Racing.com post-win.

“It’s a fantastic ride by John.

“She’s come out today and she’s really got that turn of foot back.”

Looking ahead, Young confirmed plans to target the 2021 Memsie Stakes in a fortnight with Regal Roller (2004) the last horse to complete the P.B. Lawrence – Memsie double.

“You can’t win Group 1s unless you’re in them and there’s a Memsie in a couple of weeks,” she said.

“So, we’ll have a talk to the owners and see how she pulls up obviously, but I’d love to see her back here in a couple of weeks.”

All-in 2021 Memsie Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is currently led by Behemoth and markets are available in full here.
