The opening elite level of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, nominations Group 1 $750,000 Memsie Stakes (1400m) closed on Monday attracted 21 hopefuls.
Sitting top of the all-in Memsie Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au to win her first Group 1 is the James Cummings-trained Street Cry mare Savatiano at $4.80.
Inaugural winner of the $1 million The Hunter last November at Newcastle, Savatiano debuted as a six-year-old at fortnight back at the Caulfield track winning her third Group 2 title in the PB Lawrence Stakes.
She is tipped to make it two-from-two this prep returning to the same track and distance on Saturday but rising in grade for the Memsie Stakes.
Atlantic Jewel (2013) was the last mare to win the Memsie Stakes and it is the girls on top of pre-field betting this season with Savatiano followed in the markets by the Grant & Alana Williams-trained Arcadia Queen ($5.50).
The classy daughter of Pierro has won six of her 10 starts to date and presents fitter second-up after her fifth when only 2.5 lengths off Savatiano in the PB Lawrence Stakes on August 15.
Cummings has also nominated for Cascadian who ran fourth behind his stablemate in the PB Lawrence Stakes fresh, while Arcadia Queen is ed in the Memsie Stakes nominations by her $5 million The All-Star Mile winning stablemate Regal Power out to improve on a ninth in the same lead-up event.
Nick Ryan’s progressive Nicconi six-year-old Sircconi is the other best out of the PB Lawrence Stakes nominated for a Memsie Stakes rematch with Savatiano on Saturday, the gelding having run a narrow second to her at big odds off a solid winter preparation in easier grade.
Equal $5.50 second-elect in the latest Memsie Stakes markets coming via a different form line is the David Jolly-trained Adelaide raider Behemoth.
The consistent son of All Too Hard, fourth in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m) in Sydney last November, has had three runs since for two Group 3 wins and a Group 1 fourth in The Goodwood.
He too ran on August 15 ahead of the Memsie Stakes when winning Morphettville’s Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) defeating Dalasan by nearly two lengths.
Adam Trinder’s record-holding daughter of Needs Further Mystic Journey ($9) is the other standout Memsie Stakes nominee.
Two-from-four at the Caulfield track, she won the first edition of The All-Star Mile in 2018 on the back of her historical Group 1 Australian Guineas win as a three-year-old.
After a consistent but ultimately frustrating spring, she ran a first-up eighth in the PB Lawrence Stakes but has an excellent second-up record (4:3-1-0).
