Garner Clear Favourite in Euclase Stakes 2020 Odds

The in-form Gordon Richards-trained Garner is clear favourite in 2020 Euclase Stakes betting for one of the key races on the Robert Sangster Stakes Day card this weekend in Adelaide.

Saturday sees a host of top autumn events take place at Morphettville Racecourse including the Group 2 $175,000 Euclase Stakes (1200m) for three-year-old sprinters.

The Euclase Stakes field is down to a dozen after the early scratching of Excess Funds (11) with markets firming on Barbados gelding Garner who is into $2.70 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

Yet to finish out of the money in his nine-start career to date, Garner has excellent form at the track (5:1-4-0) having enjoyed his biggest win yet last start on April 18 in the Listed Redelva Stakes (1100m).

Traditionally the best lead-up into the Euclase Stakes, the Redelva Stakes results saw Garner salute by an easy 2.2 lengths from barrier nine.

He comes into 11 this weekend with Jason Holder retaining the ride and looks the one to beat chasing the double.

Occupying the second line of Euclase Stakes betting online at $4.20 is the better-drawn Roccabascerana jumping from the opposite end of the field in barrier two.

Todd Pannell partners Will Clarken’s progressive Fighting Sun chestnut second-up having also been aboard for his second to Garner in the Redelva Stakes.

With plenty of upside and fitter for that first-up run, this former David Jolly-trained Group 1 Caulfield Guineas performer (11th) has the potential to turn the tables on his last start conqueror.

Hot on his heels at $4.60 and firming is then the early Euclase Stakes market mover, the rails-drawn Deep Field filly Xilong.

Prepared by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Xilong gets the run of the race from the inside alley in the Group 2 on Saturday and looks fit third-up chasing her first win since the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Sandown last November.

First-up she caught the eye at big odds when under a length beaten running third behind Probabeel in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

She then headed to Adelaide and ran fourth when dropping back in distance for the Redelva Stakes drawn wide (12 of 14).

Back up to 1200m and drawn barrier one, Xilong is sure to give the colts and geldings a run for their money in the Euclase.

Rounding out the single-figure hopes at $9.50 is then the Phillip Stokes-trained Sizzlefly with the outside alley to overcome.

The ultra-consistent and well-bred daughter of Sizzling enjoyed back-to-back wins first and second up, including carrying 60.5kg to a 2.2 length win over 1050m at Morphettville on April 4.

She then went up in distance for the Redleva Stakes running third when up in grade, Saturday’s race a bonus on that according to Stokes.

“Getting black type last start was exactly what we were after, whatever she does now is just a bonus,” Stokes told Racing Victoria this week.

“We do think she’s a 1000-metre horse, there’s just not many black-type races around for her at that distance.

“I think she’ll just get the 1200m, but you can’t fault her, she always runs well.”
