Australian Cup-Bound Kings Will Dream Tops Peter Young Stakes Odds

The Chris Waller-trained pre-post Australian Cup favourite Kings Will Dream is also top of the odds to win the 2020 Peter Young Stakes second-up on Saturday at Caulfield.

The card closer on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, this season’s Group 2 $200,000 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) features a nine-horse field.

The Peter Young Stakes is a traditional autumn lead-up to Flemington’s Group 1 $1.5 million Australian Cup (2000m) with Fiorente (2014) the last to do the double.

This season it is Waller’s six-year-old Casamento gelding Kings Will Dream leading the latest markets on both races.

First-up the horse caught the eye when only a quarter-length back for third in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) on February 8 at the Caulfield track.

Tipped to improve second-up dropping in grade this weekend, Kings Will Dream sits top of the Peter Young Stakes odds at $2.60 through Ladbrokes.com.au to break his Caulfield hoodoo.

He has had four runs at the course for two third places, but the money is on him to breakthrough for a win from barrier one with Mark Zahra riding.

Zahra chases his third Peter Young Stakes winning ride in four years following his recent victories aboard Stratum Star (2017) and Gailo Chop (2018).

Kings Will Dream is also the early favourite to win the 2020 Australian Cup paying $5 in the all-in markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, a price set to firm should he salute for the punters on Saturday.

Occupying the second line of Peter Young Stakes betting at $3.40 is the Grant & Alana Williams-trained WA visitor Regal Power.

The Pierro four-year-old celebrated an elite level win in Perth last November taking out the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and was in the winners’ stall again two runs later in the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes (2400m).

He has won both his subsequent summer trials ahead of his first interstate raid this weekend with the ‘Wizard of the West’ William Pike travelling for the ride.

The other most likely is the Grahame Begg-trained mare Miss Siska ($4.50) coming off her brilliant first-up win in the Group 3 TS Carlyon Cup (1600m) at the track on February 8.

The Lindsay Park-trained import Constantinople ($9.50) rounds out the single-figure hopes with the four-year-old Galileo entire last seen running four lengths back 13th behind Vow And Declare in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

“He’s ticking along really nicely. He looks fantastic and his trials have been good,” co-trainer Ben Hayes told the media this week.

“He’ll probably find the 1800 metres a little on the short side being first-up, but he’ll take a lot of improvement out of the race.

“He’ll have a light autumn, then we’ll tip him out and head towards the Melbourne Cup again.”

The David Hayes-led Lindsay Park stable also saddle-up eight-year-old Harlem ($13) second-up on the back of a Carlyon Cup fourth, the dual Australian Cup champ heading towards his shot at a hat-trick in next month’s classic.
