There may be no Winx on show for the first time in five years but Cox Plate Day is still set to draw a full house with racing at The Valley continuing after Loving Gaby won the Manikato Stakes on Friday evening.
Moonee Valley racing kicks off today at 12:10pm (AEDT) and the bumper 10 race card continues through until 5:45pm (AEDT).
Currently the Moonee Valley track rating is at a Good (4) but with thunderstorms brewing and over a 70% chance of rain before midday there is likely to be a downgrade before the big spring races of the day get underway.
The first of the Group races on Cox Plate Day is the Group 2 $300,000 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) running as Race 3 where all the original acceptors remain in play.
Other key races for punters including the Group 2 $300,000 Moonee Valley Vase (Race 6) where #8 Budget King (4) has been scratched and the Melbourne Cup types facing off in the Group 2 $500,000 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Race 7).
The Moonee Valley Gold Cup 2019 field is down to eight runners with three early scratchings and features both Humidor and Mr Quickie who failed to gain a run in the 14-horse Cox Plate field as the first two emergencies.
Two have come out of the Group 2 $300,000 Crystal Mile (1600m) leaving a line-up of 11 middle-distance gallopers before the Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) steals the show.
The 2019 Cox Plate field is set to face off as Moonee Valley Race 9 at 4:55pm (AEDT) and betting at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au suggests another Melbourne Group 1 for Japan with Lys Gracieux the favourite.
The four Cox Plate emergencies are now officially out of contention leaving the original 14 gallopers including Black Heart Bart donning the number one saddlecloth chasing a $1 million bonus and the sole three-year-old contender Castelvecchio.
