Waller’s 5 2018 Tramway Stakes runners have mixed results in barrier draw

Premier trainer Chris Waller’s five runners have had mixed results at the barrier draw for the Group 2 $200,000 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Popular galloper Tom Melbourne has drawn the rails while Queensland Oaks winner Youngstar will jump from the outside barrier in the final thirteen horse Tramway Stakes field.

Waller’s other runners are Doomben Cup winner Comin’ Through (barrier 2), dual Oaks winner Egg Tart (barrier 5) and Group 1 winning mare Foxplay (barrier 11).

All five Waller runners are resuming from a spell while first up winners Le Romain and Pierata will have a distinct fitness edge over their rivals in the Tramway Stakes.

Le Romain has drawn barrier ten with Hugh Bowman replacing James McDonald who was aboard the Kris Lees trained six year old for his first up win in the Group 3 $150,000 Nexon Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick on August 18.

“He is a very good horse but I think he has come back better this season,’’ Lees told The Sunday Telegraph.

“When he was racing back in the autumn, he was returning after colic surgery and it took him a while to hit his straps.”

McDonald has elected to stick with Pierata after the pair combined for a win in the Group 2 $200,000 Mostyn Copper Group Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on August 4.

The Greg Hickman trained four year old has won a 895m Rosehill barrier trial since with McDonald in the saddle and will jump from gate three in the Tramway Stakes.

Backmarker Lanciato has drawn out wide at barrier twelve with Tommy Berry to ride and the Mark Newnham trained six year old will appreciate the step up to 1400m after running on from the back of the field to finish fourth to Pierata in the Missile Stakes.
