Weir’s pair puts plenty of quality into 2018 Eye Liner Stakes nominations

The Darren Weir trained Group 1 winner Lucky Hussler and Japanese import Danon Liberty have put plenty of quality into the nominations for the 2018 Listed $175,000 City Of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich on Saturday.

Lucky Hussler and Danon Liberty are among the twenty nominations for the Eye Liner Stakes.

Lucky Hussler is the winner of the 2015 Group 1 $400,000 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley and the 2015 $400,000 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield while Danon Liberty is yet to have a start on Australian soil since arriving in Weir’s stable.

The Japanese import had big wraps on him before the running of the Group 1 $1.5m Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben but was made the first emergency and failed to gain a start in the premier sprint of the 2018 Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Lucky Hussler has been battling a foot problem and will be having his first Winter Carnival run in the Eye Liner Stakes after missing runs in the Group 1 $700,000 Kirin Doomben 10,000 (1200m) on May 12, in the Group 1 $700,000 Altus Traffic Kingsford-Smith Cup (1350m) two weeks later and in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Brisbane’s leading trainer Tony Gollan has three sprinters nominated for the Eye Liner Stakes, Charlie Boy, I’m A Rippa and Most Important.

Most Important will have to back up after finishing eleventh to Santa Ana Lane in the Stradbroke Handicap while I’m A Rippa, second, and Charlie Boy, fourteenth, are coming off a last start in the Listed $100,000 Spear Chief Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast on June 2.
