Adelaide racing kicks off this afternoon at 12:11pm (ACST) and the eight race card continues through until 4:42pm (ACST).
The meeting’s marquee race and latest elite level of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival is of course the Group 1 $600,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) running as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:06pm (ACST).
The official SA Derby field features 16 runners including the Travis Doudle-trained first emergency Tropical Lightning ($91) up in grade after getting the call-up following the scratching of the Darren Weir-trained Amerock.
Weir’s Chairman’s Stakes winner Leicester sits top of the latest SA Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.40 to do the double last completed by the also Weir-trained Howard Be Thy Name (2016).
Victoria’s premier trainer Weir also prepared last year’s South Australian Derby winner Volatile Mix (2017) who came off a lead-up fourth in the Chairman’s, the same form line Box on Collins ($34 into $26) brings into the race this afternoon.
The key SA Derby Day act on the card is the Group 3 $175,000 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) to be run at the Morphettville Parks track.
The 2018 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes field is down to 12 runners with three early scratchings, updated odds on Morphettville Race 4 a two-horse battle between the flying Breeders Stakes winner Tequila Time ($3.50) after a fourth on the trot and the consistent Lindsay Park-trained filly Fundamentalist ($3.70) coming off a second in the same Group 3 lead-up from April 28.
