The Snitzel colt was one of the surprises of the spring when producing a runaway four and a quarter length victory in Rosehill’s Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) as a $41 roughie.
That was despite his earlier good elite level form from that April when third to Invader in Randwick’s Group 1 $1 million ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
Things went amiss for Trapeze Artist in his final run last time in however when he finished 15th to Merchant Navy down the Flemington straight in the Group 1 $1 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
Ryan has learnt his lesson after that and plans to keep his Golden Rose champ in Sydney over the autumn with his major aim being the Group 1 $1 million Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 10.
Trapeze Artist showed he was getting ready for a solid preparation winning a Rosehill trial over 900m on Monday morning, the star-studded heat featuring the likes of VRC Derby winner Ace High (5th), the world’s best mare Winx (6th) and The Everest winner Redzel (7th).
The gun three-year-old will now likely get things underway in the Group 3 $150,000 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 10 according to his trainer.
“Trapeze Artist will resume in the Eskimo Prince and then go to the Hobartville and the Randwick Guineas,” Ryan told Racing Victoria.
“Trapeze Artist has come back really well. I think he looks terrific and he seems to be going really well.
“After he ran in the Coolmore he only had 23 days off so he’s quite forward but his trial will tell us a lot more but he can be a hard horse to get a guide on because he’s not a good track worker.”
The Group 2 $400,000 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) runs at Trapeze Artist’s home Rosehill track on February 24 and has produced seven of the past eight Randwick Guineas winners.
Last year Inference (2017) improved on a lead-up fifth in the Hobartville Stakes, while the double was last completed by Hallowed Crown (2015).
Early favourites in futures Randwick Guineas odds at bookmakers around the country are Chris Waller’s untapped Savabeel colt Kaonic and the Gregory Hickman-trained Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas winner Pierata.
Also entering the picture for the mile classic after a class win at Randwick over the weekend is the unbeaten Waller-trained So You Think colt D’Argento.
