The Brisbane Summer Sprint Series begins at Doomben Racecourse on the weekend with the George Moore Stakes 2017, betting tips and the latest odds for the Group 3 found below.

With a rain-affected track for the Group 3 $200,000 George Moore Stakes (1200m), four early withdrawals from the field leaves 10 gallopers in the mix.

Updated George Moore Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are shaping-up as a battle between the visiting Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Calanda ($2.70) first-up and the gun Queenslander Monsieur Gustave ($3.50).

Calanda is a proven Soft-track performer and gets a gun run from barrier four with local hoop Damian Browne aboard the son of Snitzel who chases his first win since Grafton’s Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) back in July.

Apprentice Tiffani Brooker retains the ride on in-form Monsieur Gustave from the Sunshine Coast, Darryl Hansen’s smart sprinter coming off a first-up win in the Listed Keith Noud Quality (1200m).

Monsieur Gustave is on the short 10 day turnaround after the Keith Noud Quality had to be rescheduled due to the wet weather in Brisbane, but has come through the win in good order and the money is coming for him in the markets for Saturday.

So will the two best in betting fight it out in the finish or is there an upset George Moore Stakes result pending from the likes of last year’s champ Most Important ($13) or the rails-drawn Brooklyn Storm ($12)?

#2 Monsieur Gustave ($3.50)

Easy to see why the money is starting to come in for Hansen’s classy sprinter from the Sunshine Coast. The Al Maher gelding won the Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) – Glasshouse Handicap (1400m0 double to round-out his winter prep then returned impressively in the rescheduled Keith Noud. Flew home first-up by three lengths to make it four-from-four on Soft tracks. Yet to race on Heavy, but the conditions should suit and he’s fitter for the resuming run. Killer second-up record (4:3-0-1) and has had three Doomben starts for two wins. Barrier 14 looked a concern, but now there’s only 10 so does less work to get to the front and will be hard to stop.

#6 Siegfried ($18)

Good price offered on this always honest Gold Coast veteran who shapes-up as a terrific place chance on a rain-affected track. Ran top four in all eight starts from December last year to June when things went amiss in the Group 2 Moreton Cup (1200m). Has trialled twice since so should be ready to fire first-up. Won at this track / distance when resuming last summer. This is tougher, but can surprise with the right run fresh from the barrier (three) with the in-form Matthew McGillivray riding very well at the moment.

#4 Most Important ($12)

Last year’s winner defends his title and is at a price after a terrible spring in Melbourne and the first-up sixth in the Keith Noud. Gets the chance to finish closer here back at Doomben and coming down in weight from 59kg to 57.5kg. Barrier two and Jim Byrne riding are two other pluses and if he gets the lead like the draw suggests he will, can go nearly all-the-way especially if the track firms up a bit.
