2017 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes: In Her Time Firms for the Win

The money is coming for the flying Benjamin Smith-trained mare In Her Time to continue her winning form heading south on Friday night for the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes 2017.

Red hot favourite to salute under the lights at Moonee Valley in the Cox Plate Eve feature is the Lindsay Park-trained Vega Magic ($2.20), but there’s also plenty of for In Her Time to take out the Group 1 $1 million Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m).

Both runners are at The Valley for the first time, but come out of different lead-ups.

Lope De Vega five-year-old Vega Magic saluted in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield before being freshened-up for the inaugural $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 14.

Things didn’t go his way in the run, but Vega Magic held for the second to Redzel in the world’s richest turf race.

The gelding is also a Group 1 winner over the Manikato Stakes distance (13: 9-2-1) having won Adelaide’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in the winter and jumps from barrier three on Friday evening with Craig Williams in the saddle.

One closer to the rails also with a gun gate two draw is Corey Brown’s mount, In Her Time, who failed to gain a slot in The Everest field.

Instead the Time Thief five-year-old backed-up from her Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) win to salute in the Listed $500,000 Sydney Stakes (1200m) on The Everest Day.

In Her Time has been tested in Group 1 grade four times before for two placings, a second in the Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) and third in the Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) back-to-back at Doomben in the winter.

Third-up she is hitting peak fitness on Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes Night, but there’s a chance she might find the 1200m a little sharp now and needs to prove her versatility going the Melbourne way.

She has been backed in from $5.50 to $5 in the Manikato Stakes betting markets however after putting in a lovely piece of work at Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning.

Her Newcastle-based trainer was thrilled with her smart gallop with Brown aboard, In Her Time clocking a slick 23.4 seconds in her final 400m sectional.

“Happy with that, she wasn’t out to do too much, she’s had three runs in six weeks,” Smith told Racing Victoria.

“She travelled down well and has settled into Flemington nicely.”

The drifter in the Manikato Stakes odds is the race’s 2015 champion Chautauqua ($5.50 out to $8) coming off a fast-finishing fourth in The Everest.

Also out of The Everest is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained English (6th) who pays $13 to return to her best form, the daughter of Encosta De Lago winless since Randwick’s Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) in the mud defeating Redzel back in early March.
