Racing at Caulfield Racecourse kicks off on Saturday, October 28, at 12:15pm (AEDT) and continues through until the card closer at 5:45pm (AEDT) with seven Group status races for punters to clean up on.

The nine acts though will fail to gain anywhere near the attention that Caulfield Race 8 draws when the meetings feature – the Group 1 $3.15 million BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) – jumps at 4:30pm (AEDT).

The world’s richest mile-and-a-half-handicap and key Melbourne Cup lead-up features a 17-horse field led in Caulfield Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au by Irish galloper Johannes Vermeer ($4.40) for Aidan O’Brien.

The international put the writing on the wall with an eye-catching debut down under last week in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes (2000m) running second and is a horse known to back-up well.

Outside of the open edition of the Caulfield Cup, there’s also plenty of value to be had right across the card and below we have our exclusive Caulfield Cup Day Best Bets for you to sink your teeth into through Ladbrokes.com.au.

In The Big One (Race 8) – 2017 Caulfield Cup

#7 Ventura Storm ($12)

A horse that has flown under the radar a little in the Caulfield Cup is one of the four for Lindsay Park, imported stallion Ventura Storm on an upward spiral and at a nice double-figure quote. Before Mongolian Khan (2015) and Jameka (2016) went back-to-back as favourites, the seven previous Caulfield Cup winners did it around this price. The five-year-old has the same lead-up as Jameka finishing second best behind the world’s best Winx in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes. Has winning form over the distance in Italy and from the gun barrier (4) with Damien Oliver on carrying 54kg he’ll be running a huge race.

Best Roughie To Place (Race 8) – 2017 Caulfield Cup

Lord Fandango looks a nice place chance at big Caulfield Cup odds this weekend

#17 Lord Fandango ($20)

There is value galore to be had in this year’s Caulfield Cup field and on just 50kg this light-weight import is a genuine place chance to finish in the money. Archie Alexander didn’t originally have the Group 1 on the radar, but too tempting to back-up after the entire made it back-to-backs wins with the charging victory in the Group 2 Herbert Power at this track / distance last weekend. Have to go back to Master O’Reilly (2007) to find the last horse to do the double, but down three kilos with a brilliant 2400m record (6-3-1-0) and upside puts Lord Fandango in the mix.

Better Than Bank Interest (Race 1) – 2017 Resimax Plate

#6 Our Crown Mistress ($2.70)

The day’s opener features 10 three-year-old fillies and this Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Star Witness filly is favourite for a reason. She is on the improve and presents rock hard fit having won her past two on the trot. The latest saw her salute over 1340m at Geelong (October 4) against a similar class by over four lengths carrying 59kg. Back to 55kg here she’ll be flying and the 1400m is ideal. She’ll lead and with the weight drop will be too hard to run down.

Best Upset To Win (Race 3) – 2017 Ethereal Stakes

#7 Coral Coast ($18)

Already the punters have abandoned the Stuart Webb-trained daughter of So You Think and that works well for those happy to forgive and forget. She’s back to a Group 3 against her own kind here after the well-bred three-year-old failed to come within eight lengths of Ace High against the boys at Randwick in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on October 7. She’s had runs the Melbourne way and is good on that leg, is based at Caulfield and this track will suit. Has winning form over a mile (by two lengths) in easier company, but she is drawn a treat (barrier four) and equal weights so is at an attractive price to bounce back.

Last Of The Day (Race 10) – 2017 Alinghi Stakes

#3 Nieta ($2.25)

The punters are coming for John Thompson’s mare like there’s no tomorrow and she is firming fast making now to get on and end the day with a win! Hugh Bowman factor and the fact there’s a bit of rain around puts this Soft track specialist (3-3-0-0) in a winning position. Two back in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) she was only 1.5 lengths off subsequent The Everest winner Redzel. Then stepped-up to 1200m when 3.7 lengths ninth to In Her Time, the Premiere Stakes form franked with that mare taking out the Sydney Stakes last Saturday. Back to 1100m this five-year-old will be too good.
