In Her Time didn’t make the $10 million The Everest field but the classy mare scored a nice consolation prize taking out the 2017 Sydney Stakes at Royal Randwick.

Prepared at Newcastle by Benjamin Smith, the Time Thief mare was the justifiably short-priced favourite for Saturday’s Listed $500,000 Sydney Stakes (1200m) on The Everest Day after a brilliant first-up win at the track a fortnight earlier.
In Her Time saluted narrowly holding off the fast-finishing English on Epsom Handicap Day in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) and had to do the same in the Sydney Stakes with Impending closing hard late.
The James Cummings-trained Impending went beautifully in a big chase, but In Her Time franked the form out of the Premiere Stakes that now looks good for runner-up English in her The Everest bid.
In Her Time was the first emergency for the inaugural The Everest field, but a slot didn’t come.
The Sydney Stakes result was a repeat of the winter’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap quinella but in reverse order, this time top honours going to the mare and her hoop Corey Brown.
Brown had In Her Time positioned beautifully in the run just off the speed set up front by Jungle Edge and the always honest Joe Pride-trained sprinter Ball Of Muscle.
Crui the Randwick rise, In Her Time got into daylight with the split coming at the right time, Brown asking her to go at the 200m where she moved ahead of the fighting Ball Of Muscle who held for third to round on the Sydney Stakes trifecta.
It was a massive first-up run from Godolphin’s Stradbroke Handicap winner Impending, the gun Lonhro stallion catching the eye with the blistering late sectionals on debut as a four-year-old.
“She ambled up the rise and I was very confident,” Brown said post-win.
“It’s a shame she didn’t make The Everest but this is a nice consolation for her.”
In Her Time is likely to head south next race for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival including possibly the Group 1 $1 million Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Eve.
