A capacity field is engaged for this season’s Group 1 $500,000 Toorak Handicap (1600m), but only four of the 18 starters are under double-figures for the win opening up the value.
The latest Toorak Handicap odds through the day’s sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au have Egg Tart as the $5 firming favourite for Chris Waller.
She missed a crucial spring lead-up in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) a fortnight back, but has recovered from the eye irritation and is ready to get back on track.
First-up the dual Oaks winning daughter of Sebring failed to come within four lengths of Deploy, who runs in Sydney’s inaugural $10 million The Everest race on Saturday, in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m).
That was her chance to add to her impressive winning streak from the autumn, which ended with the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) victory.
Egg Tart will be better over Saturday’s distance though and shapes-up as a genuine hope.
The dangers in the Toorak Handicap betting markets include stablemate Tom Melbourne ($7.50) who made it four seconds on the trot in the Epsom Handicap and Mr Sneaky ($9) who was runner-up in the Caulfield Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) last start if that’s the form you want to follow.
Earlier in the week we published a comprehensive 2017 Toorak Handicap Form Guide & Betting Preview, revealing our insider tips on the mile classic below.
1st
#10 Mr Sneaky ($9)
Happy to take on the Epsom form and tip the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes from the next day as the one to follow into the Toorak back at the same Caulfield track. This Anthony Freedman-trained High Chaparral four-year-old ran under a length back second that day and gets the chance to go one better in his first look at a mile. He loves Caulfield and is improving each run. Goes up only a half-kilo to 52.5kg so is still well-weighted in a wide open race. He’ll be ridden better than last time, hopefully a little quieter, and has an 86% Place Rate.
2nd
#15 Theanswermyfriend ($6.50)
Another on speed runner that was just waiting to get run down in the Sir Rupert Clarke, this fellow four-year-old son of High Chaparral can improve and also atone. Beat Mr Sneaky the run before at Flemington, and will relish getting back up to a mile where he has a nice record (3-1-2-0). 52kg minimum again, slight setback when failing to finish at trial on October 9, but with the right ride from the good gate can surprise.
3rd
#9 Egg Tart ($5)
Firming favourite who missed the Epsom, but is ready to go now at a mile. She won five on the trot last time out including the Schweppes Oaks – Queensland Oaks double, now out to show she can do it as a four-year-old in Melbourne. Deploy blitzed the time record when she ran second first-up and the pace will be better on Saturday. Carries 53.5kg here, down from 55kg and has claims to be the first mare to win since More Joyous (2010).
