Golden Rose Stakes 2017 Betting Update: Menari $2

Gerald Ryan’s in-form colt Menari dominates the updated 2017 Golden Rose Stakes odds after Tuesday’s final acceptances and barrier draw despite a wide gate 11 allocation for the favourite.

A line-up featuring 14 of the season’s best three-year-olds take to the Rosehill Gardens track on Saturday in Race 7 at 3:55pm (AEST) for the Group 1 $1 million De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose (1400m).

Clear favourite for the win after saluting in both runs this time in is Ryan’s flying son of Snitzel, Menari, who is into $2 in the latest Golden Rose Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The Golden Slipper fourth placegetter from the autumn is unbeaten as a three-year-old following solid wins in the Listed The Rosebud (1100m) and Group 2 The Run To The Rose (1200m).

Menari now looks to complete the treble with success in the Group 1 on the weekend.

If successful he will be the fourth on the trot to complete the Run To The Rose – Golden Rose double after the recent victories of Hallowed Crown (2014), Exosphere (2015) and Astern (2016).

The last two Golden Rose Stakes winners jumped the punters’ pick and this year the top fancy in the markets has Joshua Parr retaining the ride from barrier 11.

Parr has partnered Menari for both his lead-up wins and both he and Ryan chase their first Golden Rose Stakes victory.

On paper the wide barrier 11 draw for the colt reads poorly, but three of the past four champions in the million dollar feature jumped from double-digits including Zoustar who overcame gate 16 of 16 in 2013.

Three of the past four Golden Rose winners jumped from a double-digit barrier

Occupying the second line of the Golden Rose Stakes betting markets at $7 is Pariah drawn one wider than Menari in gate 12 with Blake Shinn to ride.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden has prepared three previous Golden Rose winners with Forensics (2008), Denman (2009) and Epaulette (2012), but this weekend is after his first in partnership with son Paul.

Pariah is an ultra-consistent son of Redoute’s Choice who was runner-up to Catchy, who is franking the form this season, in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne back in February.

First-up this campaign he won the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens, atoning for his failed Golden Slipper 11th in the wet at the track in March.

He was then second past the post when one and half-lengths off Menari in The Run To The Rose, a result he will be out to go one better than on Golden Rose Stakes Day in the rematch.

Since 2008 only one Golden Rose winner jumped at double-figure odds

Since 2008 just one Golden Rose Stakes winner jumped at double-figures when the aforementioned Epaulette ($13 in 2012) scored the upset.

Looking to continue that trend this weekend and the last of the single-figure fancies is the undefeated Ciaron Maher-trained Merchant Navy ($8.50).

Drawn a treat in gate two with Mark Zahra to ride, the Fastnet Rock colt has won all four of his career starts to date in Victoria.

He is now out to prove he is as effective the Sydney way of racing, Merchant Navy rising in class off a narrow victory in Caulfield’s Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m) on September 2.

Of the longer priced fancies those with genuine claims include the Gai Waterhouse-trained early market mover Gold Standard ($13 into $11) coming off a win in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) and Lindsay Park’s flying filly Formality ($19) who has won the Silver Shadow – Furious Stakes double against her own kind in the lead-up.
