The official Caulfield Cup 2017 nominations for the mile and a half classic on October 21 have been released by Racing Victoria today, with the Godolphin galloper Hartnell the headline early entry.

The first leg of the coveted Spring Cups double, this year’s Group 1 $3 million BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) attracted 142 horses, two more than the Melbourne Cup nominations, including 22 internationals.
Pre-field Caulfield Cup odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au are led this season by the now James Cummings-trained Hartnell who targets the feature for the first time.
A seven-year-old son of Authorized, the imported Hartnell is a dual Group 1 winner, a record that would stand much higher were it not for his encounters with superstar mare Winx.
Last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Hartnell beat subsequent Caulfield cup winning mare Jameka in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington before his second to Winx in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m).
He then went into the ‘race that stops a nation’ on the first Tuesday of November and was far from disgraced running third behind Almandin and Heartbreak City in the Melbourne Cup trifecta.
This year the Godolphin team have Hartnell on the Caulfield Cup path and he ran the ideal first-up race for his spring bid on August 19 winning the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m).
Early favourite for the Melbourne Cup 2017 along with the reigning champion Almandin is the Darren Weir-trained Japanese import ire Deus who is also a top fancy among the Caulfield Cup nominations.
Weir won the Melbourne Cup with triple figure roughie Prince Of Penzance in 2015, but the master Victorian horseman is in the hunt for his first Caulfield Cup trophy this season with 20 nominees.
Along with ire Deus other key fancy for Weir is his Australian Cup winner Humidor.
Jameka became the first mare to win the Caulfield Cup last year since Southern Speed (2011) and the female stayers are well fancied again in 2017.
The top mares nominated for a Caulfield Cup assignment this year include NZ Oaks – ATC Oaks double winning Kiwi Bonneval and the Chris Waller-trained Queensland Oaks winner Egg Tart.
Bonneval is prepared in Cambridge by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.
Co-trainer Baker is no stranger to Caulfield Cup success having taken out the race in 2015 with then four-year-old Mongolian Khan.
There are a host of other genuine New Zealand-trained stayers in the Caulfield Cup entries including Gingernuts who took out the NZ Derby – Rosehill Guineas double during the autumn and Bonneval’s ATC Derby winning stablemate Jon Snow.
The aforementioned Melbourne Cup winner from last year also Almandin holds a Caulfield Cup entry on way to his title defence in the two-mile classic, while the other best of the Lloyd Williams-owned hopefuls is improving import Crocodile Rock.
As always, the international contingent of Caulfield Cup horses is strong with headline raiders including Barsanti from the UK and the Charlie Appleby-trained Francis Of Assisi.
The Caulfield Cup first acceptances close on September 26 further narrowing down the potential runners in the $3 million spring feature.
