Due to run as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:05pm (local time) on San Domenico Stakes Day, this season’s Group 3 $150,000 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) has attracted 10 final acceptors.
Carrying 58kg and drawn well in barrier three with Tye Angland to ride is the James Cummings-trained Astoria who is nominated for all the Group 1 spring majors including the Golden Rose Stakes in Sydney and the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas the following month in Melbourne.
A well-bred son of Medaglia D’Oro the colt has had three starts including a winning debut first-up back in March in the wet at Warwick Farm.
His latest start produced an 11th to Invader in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce (1400m) at Randwick that he’ll be out to improve on fresh this weekend.
Cummings and Godolphin are also represented in the Ming Dynasty Quality field this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival by Animalia in gate four with Glyn Schofield booked to ride the gelding who won at Gosford over a mile in late July.
Also dually represented in the early spring lead-up are Peter & Paul Snowden with the undefeated duo Assimilate and Hypnotist drawn in barriers nine and two respectively.
Getting the rails run from barrier one is the returning Chris Waller-trained Sambro who is the best tried of the runners having had six runs so far.
The Fastnet Rock colt has just the one win on the record, a 1400m effort at Warwick Farm from May, but was far from disgraced in Brisbane last time out when fifth in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m).
Sambro trialled well on August 18 when third over 900m and has Jay Ford riding this weekend.
There is also sure to be plenty of hype surrounding the Bjorn Baker-trained Addictive Nature, an expensive $775,000 buy from the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sales looking to live up to his hefty purchase price.
Addictive Nature took out his Warwick Farm debut on July 19 before a last start second at Randwick over 1200m on August 5 and has won a subsequent Kembla Grange trial ahead of his first black-type test.
“He’s shown ability from day one,” Baker told AAP this week.
“He was lucky enough to win a two-year-old race so he definitely deserves his crack.”
